I’m looking at buying some bulbs and had a few questions.

I’ll probably need 8 bulbs total in 4 different rooms. Each room has an echo device. Do I need a hub as well? If so, do I need a hub for each room?

Finally where can I find the best deals? Thanks!

you just need one hub. just buy the starter kit with the hub and 2 bulbs and however many single bulbs you need.

What he said. A Hue bridge will handle 50 devices. They communicate via mesh network, so as long as every device can see part of the mesh, it can communicate with the bridge.

Once you get everything set up and get Hue basics under your belt, don't forget that you can associate certain bulbs with certain Echo devices. What this gets you is that when you say "the lights" as in "Alexa, turn the lights on" or "Alexa, make the lights blue", Alexa will look at the settings for the Echo device that the request came from and will only ask the Hue bridge to perform your request on the lights paired to that Echo device.

It's great for guests. Less syntax they have to remember if they choose to use the Echo to control the lights instead of the wall switch. Also, YOU don't have to use more complex syntax as you move around your house. Alexa will know which lights you mean for it to control based on which Echo gets the request.

I'll warn you now. Hue can be addictive. If it bites you, you're going to buy a LOT of bulbs. I started with one white and color ambiance starter kit and I now have 22 devices.

ETA: 24. I forgot my two motion sensors. At least if you're patient, you can plan new additions for when one of the periodic (3 or 4 times a year) sales happens.

Ok I pulled the trigger on the starter 4 pk (white/color). Found it on eBay for $135 (free shipping/no tax). I figured I’d start with baby steps.

That comes to about $34/bulb including the hub. How much should I expect to pay if I’m just buying the bulb? Pretty close to that amount?

Put white and color ambiance in there with motion sensors. Trust me. Your wife/SO is going to love taking long baths with mood lighting. Walking into the bathroom half asleep at 3 am and having the lights come on a dim red, like in a submarine, so it doesn't blast your night vision is fantastic.

It's also great in guest bathrooms so people unfamiliar with your place don't have to search for a light switch in the middle of the night when they have to pee.

That's about the lowest you'll pay for white and color ambiance. They're normally $50 a bulb, but when one of the sales comes around, you can usually have them for $35.

you can get crazy good deals sometimes at home depot; watch this board.

next step once you have them is to check out the scenes, integrate it with alexa and create a free account at IFTTT so you can have the bulbs respond to rain, LSU playing on TV, the temperature dropping, alexa timers, etc..

i dont know if there is a recipe for blinking lights with google home timers. i looked briefly and the only IFTTT recipes that appeared are for alexa.

you may have to do it using stringify which has a bit of a learning curve.

Is Hue the way to go or are there any good amazon knock offs?

hue

seriously, don't deal with the knockoffs. hue is part of a larger ecosystem (alexa, google home, ifttt, stringify, etc) and so you won't find all the fun apps and recipes if you stray.

I recently put 12 white/Color in my outside soffit. I like the scheduler to come on and off at certain times. I bought one of the Halloween apps that is really neat and will be lots of fun come Halloween night with a Bluetooth speaker.

I just ordered some socket extensions for the bulbs I have in recessed housing.. The bulbs currently sit too far back and have more of a spotlight effect.

They're also in 6" recessed can, which doesn't look all that great w bulbs being so much smaller relative to i.d. of housing. Have any of you done anything to get a cleaner look and effect w similar setup?

I was thinking about either getting trim/cover to better fit the bulbs smaller profile.

or like a shower trim w frosted cover that diffuses the light.

I know they have the retrofit lights but they're only in white ambient.. Or is that what I need, and just change the bulb?!

Or should I just replace them with the Hue flood lights and use these elsewhere?

Ok I’ll bump this thread. Since buying bulbs for our bedrooms I’ve got them on the front porch and more on the way for a couple other rooms. Like someone else it can be addicting.

I’ve downloaded the hueDynamic pro app which looks pretty solid.

How do I go about setting up scenes? I’m specifically looking at purple and gold on the front porch for the game this weekend seeing that I’m in the middle of rebel country. Maybe slowly going back and forth between the 2 colors and/or having the 2 on the left turn purple while the ones on the right are gold and vice versa. I’ve got a former rebel receiver coming over to watch the game with me and I want to surprise him.

I’ll hang up and listen. Thanks

ETA: I figured it out through the app. Pretty easy actually

If you want it static, you just set up the exterior lights you want into a room using the Hue app. From the Hue app's home screen, tap on the name of the room containing the exterior lights. Then tap on the button with three vertical dots next to three horizontal lines. This will show you each bulb. You click on each bulb individually and you can set its color. After they're all set how you want them, you click "new scene", give it a name, and you're done.

If you want them to operate dynamically or on a timer, you'll need something like strigify or IFTTT and, as a bonus, they hook into all kinds of third party offerings. My lights automatically assume purple and gold at gametime. ESPN pushes the notification to Stringify, which then turns all of the lights in the house off then turns them on one by one, alternating purple and gold. That's a bit outside of what I can reasonably help you with here, though. You really just need to play with Stringify to see what the possibilities are. The good news is that Stringify's hooks let you pick specific Pantone colors instead of blindly picking from a color wheel. LSU's official Pantone colors are

LSU Purple
RGB: R-70 G-29 B-124
HEX: #461D7C

and LSU Gold
RGB: R-253 G-208 B-35
HEX: #FDD023
