I went barebones and it is either the Mobo or CPU. It's a i7 2600k and MSI P67. So I'm figuring just going ahead and upgrading.

Should I a build a pure server with dual Xeon e5 2680s. Or should I stay the hybrid route and keep the possibility of gaming. Granted I haven't bought a PC game in 5 years.

what all do you need it to do? You almost certainly don't need a true server build.

If dual socket motherboards werent so damn expensive I'd go dual xeon too. ECC DDR3 ram is crazy cheap though

It sounds like you need storage more than anything. I don't really know a whole lot about setting up a surveillance system. I think the level of performance that you need to buy for is probably going to depend mostly on how many cameras you plan run and of what quality video you plan to have them present. But it sounds like you already bought your new stuff

No I haven't. I had this whole system set up on an i7 2600k. It did fine but did lag when multiple transcoding took place. I wanted to beef my system up. I'm running 4 cameras now but would like to run more at some point. I have 13 tbs of HDD space right now. So I'm good for now.

Yep got an email soon after about a compromised account.

Seems like your in the know, you think I'll be better off getting the 8700k and a z370 Mobo over getting dual xeons?

Do you have a rack? If you want to offload your server stuff, My dual Opteron crapped out and I picked up a dl 360 gen7 for $150. Put esxi on it and host plex/ssh/games etc. Got 4 SAS 10k 450g new for $200. Covers most of my bases as I don't store a bunch on my ubuntu plex server. Not an exact fit but check out some used 1 or 2u's. My last server was overkill and I never pushed it's limits. Regret building it honestly.

Then just build a standard gaming rig and mine when afk

Edit: g7 not g8

8700K will be cheaper and far better for gaming.

Heh, I'm still rocking a i7-2600k @ 5GHz in my gaming rig that I built in 2011. I upgraded the video card last year to a GTX 1080 Ti and still crushing anything I throw at it.

well i believe the 2600k is still alive and its the mobo, but why buy an outdated mobo instead of upgrading the whole thing.

I have rulled out the PSU is there a way i can test a bad mobo without another mobo or CPU

Check the current prices of GPU's before you decide to go the gaming route.

Yea I'll take two of those 1080ti when they become obsolete to mining

What are you making daily on that setup?

Really hard to say cause your getting paid in coins that fluctuate, I have them spread on different machines, and their mining different things. My guess would be 30-60 bucks a day.

Sounds about right. My 1080s and 1050ti get about $8.50/day
