amazon forces updates down your throat on those things until they essentially render them useless.

2 years was a good run

I have 5 year old firestix and 7 or 8 year old fire boxes that all work fine.

They aren't anywhere near as good as they used to be. Even though they have say they will be keeping keeping up with there android fork in the future. They have been putting a lot into developing VegOS. If The problems are to bad get an Onn TV box plus next. the pro is better in some ways but has an older chip set so the plus is cheaper and out performs the pro in many ways. If you can wait, Supposedly the update to the pro should be coming out next year and I have a feeling that will be something better than the Sheild finally.

Comparison of Current Onn GoogleTV boxes.

Onn refreshed their lineup, at least at my local Walmart. Everything is 50% more expensive and the old 4k box is a stick now.
