Bought a house and a denon avr1600 7.2 was left behind. It plays music thru heos but I am not getting any sound when I connect to the tv. I have the hdmi wire connected to the arc port. Do I also need an audio optical cable? Thanks.

No, but something is obviously wrong. What is your cable/satellite connected to?

The ARC HDMI on that receiver is an output. Thre is no HDMI ARC input on it.

You need to use the HDMI input and connect from the cable box or satellite box directly to the appropriate input on the receiver and then use the HDMI output to connect to the TV.

Imo it's usually better to go with optical. ARC/CEC can cause issues that will drive you nuts including lip sync issues.

Is your TV ARC capable ? If so the HDMI OUT/ARC can be used as an input for the TV audio provided you have a proper HDMI cable too. This would be useful if you are using the smart features of the TV and wanted to send that audio out back down to the AVR.

Now if you have external sources, cable box, stream box, video game system then you want to plug those directly into the HDMI inputs on the back of the AVR and let it handle all the processing and switching.
