I've got a number of smart plugs and lights scattered around the house that make up the majority of my home automation items. I had 3 Belkin WeMo plugs, but recently deactivated and sold my Belkin WeMo switch, while keeping my 2 Belkin WeMo insight switches. This morning I got an alert on IFTTT at 4:58 AM telling me that 'kitchen light' switched on. None of my devices are named 'kitchen light', and I only had IFTTT monitoring one plug, the plug that I sold (which I conveniently had forgotten about until this morning's reminder).

Needless to say, even though I've removed the device from my Belkin devices in the WeMo app, IFTTT is still picking up the device's activity including its change of name. Some food for thought for anyone buying used smart devices.

Can't you wipe the memory of smart devices?

who thinks about wiping the memory of a lightbulb or outlet they sell on ebay?

yes, you can but most people wouldn't think about it.

This could make for a great practical joke - can you still control it?

Set IFTT for random on/off cycles - just for laughs...

Probably had to scroll through a good 4 to 5 pictures to get the full shaft. Those screens are tiny. Sorry for the hassle.

Not sure what zoom level you were using but I thought maybe between the pics and your screen name you had a lot of Asian ancestors.

I received another alert this morning that 'kitchen light' turned on at 4:45 AM. I did look over my applets to see if I could increase monitoring or control the plug, but the plug itself is not available in the drop-down of available WeMo plugs for me. This is one of those glitch in the matrix ordeals

A really good reason why people should have a home security audit or review.

The typical homeowner messing around with HA devices doesn't know that this could be a problem.

i posted a screenshot over 2 years ago on here now where i could see a GE light i bought at home depot 'lived' at a different location here in nashville.

crazy that the light bulb contained that info.
