I'd go with 10 Playbars and 6 subs.

10.6 >>>>>>> 5.1

Sonos doesn't use wires. Uses them WiFis for sound and runs on happy thoughts.

Will it sound better than my receiver/5.1 set-up, or should I just get 5 separate Playbars?

I guess that depends on how much you like Element #4 on your periodic table.

How do you like your SVS center being unmatched from your L/R?

And any tips on a center that, as the wife puts it, "looks like real wood?"- she's not a fan of black/white high gloss finishes.
I'm trying to upgrade a Bose Acoustimass setup left by the previous owners, and this is the first piece to go- this is the main live-TV watching room. Most of the music and movies are upstairs on my attempt at a "big rig"
Current front-runner is a B&W htm71 s2 in rosenut - it's the right color/size and at my local Best buy, but i figured you'd probably know of something better for the money.

The SVS is a good center, however, I am probably going to change it out in the next year.
I am talking with Sean of Zu Audio to have a custom center channel made that has 3 x 10” full range drivers and an internal 12” powered woofer. It will be large—probably 40”wide by 13” deep and 13” high, and probably painted to McIntosh “meter blue”

Since Zu audio speakers are super efficient, I may get a McIntosh MC75 tube mono amp to drive it (75w x 1). The speaker will probably have a 98-99dB sensitivity.

I need something that can handle a bit more SPL (volume). The SVS can’t keep up with the rest of the system when I play concerts at really high levels (it can get insanely loud in here when I push it). The 7” mid-bass woofers will start to bottom out when I drive it hard. It is fine for everything else—just not when I crank really loud concerts.

Keep in mind that most people aren’t driving their centers to the levels I am—I listen loud and have for 35 years—so most will have no issues with the SVS.

I will check into centers with alternative finishes. Keep in mind that most higher end manufacturers will do a custom finish...for an up charge. Focal makes a few wood finishes I believe—probably the Electra line and Kanta line.

Many speaker manufacturers (Wilson, Focal, Magico, MBL—to name just a few of many that do), will custom paint a speaker to sample—you want them to match your Miami Blue 911 Carrera?...no problem.

Bryston makes great center channels as well, but you have to check their site for finish options. You may find a used Sonus Faber with a wood grain finish that isn’t too expensive. You may also consider mounting a flat Magneplanar center on the wall under the TV if that is doable. There is, in essence, no real body on it, and the fabric “sock” that surrounds it can be a plethora of colors..

Yet not one person has commented on Sonos legendary resell value.

Bunch of stupid consumers.

I don’t think a single person has even discussed speaker wire. Snake oil wire companies does not equal speaker differences. Someone who believes all speakers sound the same is either truly hearing impaired or a troll.

What are you trying to match the center channel to? That B&W is a 3 way center and fairly power hungry which leads to the what’s powering your LR and C?

I’ve owned tons of different B&W speakers and currently have an 11.2 channel B&W setup in our theater (7 channels are 800 Diamond series and 4 are in ceiling Atmos channels). I love their centers, but I don’t think they do a great job blending with lots of other speaker companies’ mains. I’d give KEF reference series a hard look. It does a good job of blending with other brands. I’ve got the R600C matched with Focal Aria’s in my living room. The KEF’s have gorgeous wood cabinets. KEF 600c

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't care about resell value when I buy things.

LMAO, you just making stuff up. No where on their website do they even mention this because it’s not a real thing. People don’t buy electronics for resale value lol. You have no idea what these things will be worth 5 to 10 years from now. They could literally brick all the devices if they wanted too.

How much sleep should I get?

I take at least one or two naps during the day. What's your recommendation?

Well there is a market for vintage audio equipment. That’s the thing with those pieces, you can pull them out a box 20 years from now and they work. Not dependent on a sever somewhere in order to work.

The earlier I rise the more money I make to buy toys.

The Dynaudio Special Forty's arrived yesterday. Very impressive right out of the box and the break in period has only begun. For a bookshelf speaker they deliver bass in spades.

Speaking of vintage. I've been longing to open up my LP collection and do some listening. I was going to buy a turntable but I have an old Pioneer PL-7 laying around. I did some research on it and the turntable geeks hold it in pretty high regards for what it is. Fired it up last night and it operated perfectly. It was made somewhere around 1982.
