Doc,

I’ve got the 6011 as well. It’s used to power my rear channels in the living room and speakers in my office. As someone that owns that AVR and huge B&W fan/owner, I’m feel pretty certain that you’re not going to like the pairing. In fact, you’ll hate it. That center is too much speaker for the 6011 to do it justice. To be sure, I tinkered with mine to see how it sounded. My center is the B&W HTM2D3. I hooked it up to the 6011 and it was meh.

I see where you’re going with this, so I would get that center and get a high quality used amp to power it. Use the 6011’s center preout. If that’s not doable, get a less hungry center like the KEF.

Man! Thanks for going through the trouble. The HTM71 looks sensitive on paper, but it has very similar specs/ratings to your HTM2d3 (sens 89 vs 90dB, power amp rec 30-100 vs 50-200w into 8ohms), so I can't imagine it will sound a whole lot better with just my receiver- especially when I have it driving 8 other channels.

I guess we'll take a closer look around our local Magnolia center offerings and then check out what KEF has going on if we can't agree on one from there.

As much as I'd like to put something nicer pushing sound through that room, I really can't justify it where we are now and with what I'm going to want to eventually do with the "real" system in my man cave- I'll probably convince my wife that either the 802 or 803 d3s belong up there in about a year or two. Don't want to abuse the gift of an upgrade approval so early on.

The first 2 generations of B&W Matrix series of loudspeakers were notorious for being a little difficult to drive with ease. Not brutal, like an electrostatic panel or planar speaker, but a bit more taxing than many of its cone peers.

The reason was that they had a nasty impedance dip in the upper registries, and would continually drop down to 1.8 ohms. If you had a stout power amplifier that was capable of driving 1-2 ohm loads, not a real issue...but many people who bought them weren’t aware of this, and were using amplifiers which weren’t up to the task, resulting in harsh sound from the tweeter and in some cases, burned up tweeters.

The latest generation doesn’t have those issues, FWIW.

If you plan on dropping 15-20k on D3’s within a year or two, get the B&W center and get something like a Emotiva amp for a few hundred bucks. Better than spending 1k on a KEF and then having to buy that B&W to match those D3s anyway.

Any thoughts on a Focal cc700? There's a guy on Audiogon selling 40% off ($650-->$390).
Sensitivity 91dB, 8ohm speaker, claims minimum impedence is 5.1ohm. 25-200W power handling.

And then if that's not sounding right coming off the receiver, adding a Dayton Audio APA-150 as a monoblock on it?

ETA: Went by the Magnolia Center in town today. Ordered the b&w HTM72s2 in Rosenut after hearing it driven off a Marantz sr7012 in the store.

You're definitely right that it could use a power amp behind it. The HTM71 and the HTM2D3 sounded real flat and surprisingly not that much different thst the 72 off the AVR.

I was actually REALLY pleasantly surprised at how the M1 satellites sounded- they're really going to brighten the room while being discreet when I get around to that upgrade. I'll probably grab an Emotiva 5-channel or possibly a Rotel off Audiogon in the next few weeks when this thing comes in.

I think I’ve decided to upgrade my main receiver to the Yamaha RX-a3080 and use my a820 to power zone 3. Since my a820 has 2 zones can I subdivide zone 3 into zones 3 and 4 so that I can control the porch and yard separately? Or should I just don line level volume control?

Also, tigerwise you were saying do analog sound so I could get sound in zones 2 and 3. Would an HDMI splitter out of HDMI 1 then to each tv work for that as well?
