Help my boost my wifi

I have ATT UVerse internet. I’m pretty illiterate these days with technology. Id like to boost my Wi-Fi signal to reach outside and upstairs.
Any idea what I can do? Outside and upstairs might require two separate “boosters”. It’s possible that something upstairs could also reach outside.

Most here will probably suggest getting one of the mesh router systems. Google wifi, eero, orbi, etc. I don't know if I've seen anyone complain about any of them.
You can maybe get by with a 2-pack, but depending on your square footage and layout you may need 3 or 4 units. I don't know if any of them offer outdoor units, but the regular ones usually hold up pretty well under a patio.

thanks. I dont think the outdoor one needs to actually be outdoors. its for my pool controller and some security cameras. Probably near a back door would be good enough.
Would you recommend one of the ones you suggested? I just want something that works all the time and doesnt cause me headaches. I dont have a lot of time to troubleshoot things like this.

I got the netgear Orbi for under $100 on Amazon. Router plus two satellites. Strong signal over a half acre.

will this mess up my UVerse? I have a router from AT&T. I dont even know if I can change it out

It took me 5 mins to swap out my old router. You just download the app and follow directions. Plug and play. If you name the mesh router the same as old you done have to change anything on your devices

I use unifi gear so I don't have a lot of time with any of them, but I can tell you about my brief experiences with them.
I've set up one Orbi system. I don't know if I was doing something wrong but it took several attempts and a lot of time to get it going. Since then though it's been rock solid and very fast with very good coverage.
I have added a unit to an existing Eero setup. Maybe it was an older system and newer ones are better, but coverage was not very good even with 4 units and wifi security cameras kept dropping their connections. I also manage another Eero system though and it handles a lot of devices with zero problems so YMMV.
I have a client with Google wifi, and aside from the satellite unit needing a reboot one time it has been trouble-free and coverage seems good.
Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

quote:I'm assuming you have one box that is a modem/router combo. If so you will have to put it in passthrough mode and disable its wifi in order to use a different router. AT&T might offer a wifi extender, but I know nothing about them or what the monthly fees might be (don't get roped into additional fees). You might be able to buy these outright though, but I doubt anyone here would recommend sticking with the at&t wifi.

I’ve actually got two boxes. A modem and then a wireless router

Perfect, the install should be pretty simple with no config changes on the modem.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong then. I got the orbi for our second floor because the cox "panarama" is signal is laughably bad. Set up in the dead center of second floor with satellites on either end to "boost" signal. My PC has 1 bar and the main unit is about 6 ft from my pc. I did buy a new antenna for the wifi card in hopes that changes the signal strength but even the tv upstairs has "poor" strength with one of the satellites.
I hate cox internet at baseline.

Something is definitely wrong there. Speculation incoming...
Your PC might be too close to the Orbi. Wifi doesn't work well if the signal is too strong, and I believe Orbi is known for absolutely blasting a signal out. If only 6 ft away and if the unit has an ethernet port, I would plug it in. If it doesn't then maybe try moving it further away.
You changed the antenna on the wifi card, but it's still the same card? Card might be flaky.
Check the Orbi app and make sure the PC and TV with poor signal are connecting to the Orbi units that you expect.

What speed do you have with Cox? Know that the speed you have is the absolute MAX at perfect time that you can ever have HARDWIRED. You'll never get those speeds for wifi.
Do you have your main Orbi router hard wired to your Cox router? Did you disable/turn off the Cox router wifi 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands? Are you 1000% sure you're connected to the Orbi signal or the Cox signal? To me it sounds like you're still connecting to the Cox router.

Card is fine, all hardware drivers are up to date, there is a wall between orbi and PC (standard 2x4 wall with insulation). Nothing that should dampen the signal that significantly. The router and TV have direct line of sight about 12-15 ft so that’s what’s more confusing.
PC previously hardwired but had another child and had to move equipment into another room that we built after child. Made the mistake of not adding a drop in the room and kicking myself now. I’ve gone through 2 new wireless routers and both have had the same results.
I did order a new wifi card and antenna. I’m going to swap it and see if you’re right. It’s just very confusing because I’ve never had an issue with “signal strength”

Two different routers with the same results on multiple devices? Have you ever had good wifi results in this house?
I guess it's possible you have severe interference. Do you live near a radio tower or similar? Have you tried both 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi?

I think we’re 500/10 or 20
Yes I’m 1000% sure I’m not on the cox network. The network name is “[Name]_upstairs”
The cox signal doesn’t reach my PC which is hilarious because it’s not far, 30ft straight line distance.
