Google Photos Backup Quality

So I have been backing up my photos and videos in original quality, and a couple of months ago I ran out of my free 15GB space for original quality. Backups since running out of space have been converted to "high" quality. If I purchase more storage, is there an easy way to get the high quality backups to be replaced by original quality ones. The originals are all still on my phone.

if your pics are 16mp or under, the quality remains the same if it's on "high" quality. For videos it's 1080p or under

That's a good question. I've never thought about it. I just assumed they were replaced automatically.

Yeah, it's the video that is noticeable. It might say 1080p, but they compress the hell out of it. Check the file size of your 1080p video on your device vs. the file size of the backup if you're not on original quality. It's about a 4x difference. You won't notice it on your phone because it'll always play the original, but I realized when playing the backed up file off of the original device, the quality is sorely lacking.

Nothing I take pics or video of with my phone need quality higher than what Google saves.
I have a high end Nikon to use for stuff I really care about or want to enlarge for a high quality print

I never considered that. Thanks for the info
to answer your question though, I would delete the photos in "high" quality from your Google Photos and upload them again in original quality

So how do you backup and store your photos off site? The recommendation is that you have three forms of storage for photos. I'd prefer that my photo collection that is stored off site comes back to me in it's original resolution and anything taken on my Nikon is probably going to exceed what the OP is asking about.

Yep, looks like that's the only way to do it. I'll have to turn off "backup and sync" first, because if I delete the copy from google photos, even though it's a compressed backup, it wants to delete every copy from every device. I was just hoping there was an easy way to do it, kind of like the "free up storage" option lets you convert from original to high quality with one click.

I thought there was an option to change that but I can't seem to find it

I use Google Photos to backup my phone pictures.
For real photos, I obviously keep them on my SSD, and also backup my Lightroom catalog and underlying photos to Drive and put some of my collections on SmugMug.
I know they tell you not to go entirely cloud, so I may eventually get an external SSD or something else. Until I get to the point where I have photos of my kids (no kids yet) or something else priceless I don't worry much about any further backups.

I use Mediafire fwiw. You can share links from there too.

You need to keep up with slickdeals. Google has added 2GB of storage to me for the last 2 years just for performing an account verification. Takes about 2 min and bam, 2GB. Slickdeals always pushes it to a frontpage deal so you see it.
The deal is expired, but you can sign up for alerts.
