My new iPhone X is coming in today. Can I take my SIM card out of my old phone and put it in my x? Also, can I wipe my 6 and give it to my dad to use? Thanks.

Should be able to, but he'll need to go get a SIM.

Not sure about AT&T, but Verizon and Apple send new sim cards already in the new phone and you just activate it when you restore your phone. If it doesn't have a sim card for some reason, Verizon makes you get online or call them to activate the phone with the sim card. AT&T may be different.

Yes, he may be able to use your old sim card if you go talk to AT&T (definitely if you are on the same account) or he may just have to get a new one.

Gotcha. So I should just let my kids play with it as a toy?

You can take out your old iPhone 6 sim and put it in your X, but ATT will set it up in the store and just activate your new sim card. They will also transfer all of your data (contacts, photos, videos, etc). DO NOT WIPE YOUR iPhone 6 before they transfer everything unless you know you've backed up it up to iTunes or iCloud.

After they transfer everything and get your X activated, you'll want to sign out of your icloud account on your 6 and then wipe it. It'll be fine to give to your dad then, but he will have to just get ATT to make him a new, smaller(nano) sim. Depending on the store, they'll either do it for free or no more than $5. Contacts, photos etc are not kept on the sim card anymore so your dad will need to have his data transferred as well.

As much of a hassle as this sounds, it will be worth it to give your dad your 6. The iPhone 4 is very obsolete, other than the phone lagging badly because of software, it's getting harder and harder to find parts if anything needs to be fixed. A lot of times you'll have to go to ebay to find parts for shady dealers.

I work at a phone repair shop currently, if you have any other questions just reply, I'll try to jump back on here in a little while to check.

PS.. Please for the love of God get a case for your X. Apple put glass on the back similar to Samsung so that you can wirelessly charge your phone. Well, they F'd up the design big time. I've been working to get the glass of the back of an 8 Plus for over 10 hours and I still can't get it all off and I've almost made the phone unusable. Our manager/owner just decided to come back and run the store without any knowledge of cell phone repair and decided to take that 8 in with a broken back. Until the suppliers to decided to start selling iPhone 8 and X back glass already attached to the frame, you will not find any repair shop who works on them. If they do there is a good chance they will mess up your phone bad. Our owner is going to have to shell out 800 to buy this person a new phone.

First thing I am going to do.

So, I have to go to an ATT store before I am able to use my new phone?

Thanks.

No, you can do a backup of your 6 to icloud, then set up your X based off of the backup. You can do this all from home. It will be ready to set up when you receive it. After you're done, just do a factory reset on the 6 and give it to your dad. He may have to take it to a store to set up, but most likely he can just call AT&T to have it set up. You'll need the phone's IMEI number, and maybe the number on the sim card. It's been a couple of years since I set one up on AT&T, but every time I was able to call from another phone and set it up.

Like Rob said, you can set up your X from an iCloud or iTunes back up of your 6.

I didn't know if you were going to have to go pick it up from ATT or not. It's faster to just have them do it cause it's a wire transfer and not based on the internet like iCloud.

However, the iCloud backup depends on how much data you have on your phone currently. Apple only gives you 5 GB of storage on iCloud to start. If you have more than that, which most people do, then you'll either have to buy more storage capacity from Apple, it's not expensive at $0.99/month for 50 GB, but it's just an extra hassle and extra money, be it a dollar, that you necessarily don't need. iTunes back up is on your computer and you can back up everything to there regardless of the amount as long as you have the space on your hard drive, but you'll have to have your X plugged into the computer to restore it.

Ok, the X just showed up on my desk. Let me make sure I am understanding this. I need to backup my 6 to itunes then after setting up my X plug it into itunes and sync it? That should do it?

After that do a factory reset on my 6? Thanks.

Almost. You should be able to set up the X from iTunes. I don't think you would set it up then sync it. What you want is near the bottom of this page, under the use iTunes section.

^^THIS^^

if you don't want to go to att to set up you can do a simple sim card swap from your 6 to your X if you have a needle or something tiny to push into the little hole on the right side of the phone.

Is it purchased music through iTunes? As long as your signed on under the same account they should be there. You just have to download each one.

So, the phone comes on and I can see contacts and pictures. However, none of my music or downloaded apps are there. Oh, and I can't make a call. Any clue?
