Guys I need help since I am a computer neophyte.
My 14yo son is a music producer (although not a computer guy) and he frequently livestreams and does video edits along with moving large music files for his music production. His current PC is an HP desktop with 16GB of DDR4 and 512 SSD + 1TB HDD. My son is claiming that its slow.

His producer buddies have recommended an MSI Pulse GL66 gaming laptop BUT as far as I can tell the specs/capabilities all seem similar.

Will this laptop, despite similar specs, really be that much faster?

Can you recommend a laptop that will be suitable for his needs? Would like to stay under $1500 if possible.

Thanks!!!

Probably not, laptops have to conform to different TDP's, i have never done audio production, but i've done some video work years back, and it was always on a workstation. Couldn't imagine using a laptop.

I'm sure there's a reason he wants a laptop, planning on DJing somewhere maybe and needs the portability?

What would help is if we knew a bit more of the specs esp the CPU of the current HP. Do this: Start -> type "dxdiag". It will open a window with a System Information section on the 1st tab. If you can post a screenshot, do that but at least the "Processor" would be good.

If it's a fairly recent HP you probably won't see a big improvement with a laptop, which for the same price usually lags a bit in performance compared to a desktop. (Meaning a desktop by itself, not a combo with monitor and other stuff added to the price - presumably you already have that.)

Ok - yeah that AMD 3050U is pretty low end and will get smoked overall by that laptop which has an 11th gen Core i7 (most recent is 12th gen). Depends somewhat on how the software uses multiple cores as the i7 has 8 vs just 2 on the 3050 but even single core is going to be faster on the i7.

Wow. Ok that’s good to know.

Anything else y’all would recommend in the $1500 or less range?

Not DJing but definitely going to studio and visiting other producers to collaborate. As well as taking it on family trips, ect. He’s always grinding on his craft.

He actually just got signed to a pretty big label.

That one you linked is a pretty good deal on the spec. You'd have to move up to the Core i9 to get much of an improvement and I'm not sure it would matter for your son's purposes. Here's what looks like a good deal on sale right at your budget limit, which is rare for an i9 equipped laptop:

$1500 Asus i9 @ Best Buy:
