re: General security camera discussion (was "Unifi Protect security cameras")

I'm going to start an open source project that will pretty much be a clone of Protect but for arbitrary ONVIF cameras. I know there are a million NVR/VMS apps already, but they all have some glaring flaw for me. I will attempt to make the server side distributed (like zoneminder multi-server) so that it will be possible to run it on a fleet of Pi's or similar. Then we would have an NVR that's scalable and modular. We could move the video analysis and even storage out to the edge and eliminate a central server entirely.

There are a lot of parts to a camera system. Obviously the video streams, but also the ONVIF event stream that the cameras put out, possibly secondary motion or object detection, then of course the video streams must be recorded and the events indexed to the right position in the video files (I haven't figured this part out yet), then we have timeline generation and playback and all the user facing stuff and notifications and on and on. I just want to break all of it down into standalone components that can be stacked together as needed and across multiple systems. For example I want to build a Pi camera that handles object detection and storage onboard, and also re-streams the video and ONVIF events for a second system to process. I'd also like a Pi-based cluster NVR system that can grow with your needs rather than the typical big jumps from an 8 to 16 to 32 camera NVR. And if I'm going that far just make the cameras themselves the NVR cluster.
Anyway, I'm going to use Go for this project and I've found a couple libraries for ONVIF and RTSP already. It's pretty easy to scan the network for ONVIF cameras, probe each camera for its RTSP stream url, and start recording video. So I already have a really basic NVR. Next I will look into subscribing to the ONVIF event stream and figure out how to store them and generate a timeline. Maybe I will post the code after that.

G4 Instant
And of course it's sold out like everything else.
Improvements over G3 version:
2MP -> 4MP
Outdoor rated
Smart detections
$29 -> $99
Supposedly the G4 Flex isn't far behind, and I really hope they price it around $100 as well. None of this really matters though if they can't keep anything in stock. I know the whole world has problems right now but UI seems especially bad.

i just want to get my hands on a few G3 instants...those would be great for baby cams

I hate to say it, but $30 is too cheap for what the g3 instant was. I felt like it was an interest-gauge product where they found there was interest.
$100 for the g4 sensor (assuming it’s the same as the doorbell) is money well spent, if it’s ever available again.

You're probably right. I also don't get the pricing of the Dream Router that's in EA. A wifi6 router with a couple PoE ports that also runs Protect and Talk for $79?! No way that makes it to GA at that price, but if it does holy crap.

I just got an email that they will have black friday deals.....i wonder how much stock they will have.

Looks like the BF stuff is just going to be for the consumer AmpliFi line?

If I catch one in stock, I’ll buy it in a heartbeat. I still use a software controller at the office that could be replaced.
I’m stoked about the new g4 wifi cam IF my UDMP can support it. It warns me that I’m near the camera limit.
This weekend I’ll be installing at my father in law’s house:
USG (had mine leftover from the upgrade to UDMP, and I want to test if PPTP from USG server to client can “fool” his ISP at his camp. UDMP does not have a PPTP server and only allows L2TP server, USG does not have an L2TP client, and I want to see if this acts differently than “site to site.” I probably could have read on the matter or asked someone, but the UDMP was out of stock anyway) CKg2, he insisted on dedicated NVR, 6x g4p bullets, couple of APs, and two doorbells.
Will include trenching to a little pool house and then we are going to test the limits of cat6 cable- we have a run that is going to be probably 100m or a bit more. Didn’t measure it. Ideally we will put a camera out at the back of the property. I’ll update when it’s done. I think I’ll get it all done

How is every single camera on UIs site out of stock except for the $1800 on.
Posted on 11/29/21 at 12:56 pm to CarRamrod
That’s SOP there. Check daily. They’ll be back and out again on a weekly basis.

They even offered up a G4Pro without audio (citing chip shortages) in EA for the same damn price.

CORRECTION: G4 INSTANT DOES NOT DO SMART DETECTION
Per note on this page:

The Smart Detection feature is only available for G4 and AI series cameras, except for G4 Instant.
Way to go, Ubiquiti. Create a product line with a label (G4) that means smart detection, then put out a G4 camera that can't do it. I guess they can get away with it in EA, but if they move it to GA as-is at the same price, I might be done with UI.

I picked one up because it was available for about 30m last week. It was gone before I could get my father in law to buy one (limit 1).
Picture quality seems pretty similar to the g3i. No smart detections, but I thought I was just glossing over something.
I haven't played much with it. But I still think it's a great fit in the ecosystem at $100, though it is SLIGHTLY annoying that the connector needs to be this semi-proprietary right-angle USB-c for the camera to sit down right and be able to be removed without fear of breaking it. The included cable is plenty long. But it's too long There will supposedly be a usb-c -from - POE power supply in the future, but I feel like that's going to look clunky, too.
It's a minor complaint and basically to be expected with a wifi product.

New UniFi camera out in EA, the AI Bullet. It's black and $300 like the AI 360. UI is always ambiguous with their product features, so I'm not sure what's improved over the G4 here. The hints are "the camera also provides pristine nighttime video to deliver high-quality surveillance around the clock" and "Note: AI-powered vehicle classification and pet detection functionality coming soon". So I guess it has pretty good low light picture and maybe an upgraded processor so it can not only identify but also classify vehicles.
4MP, not 4K, but honestly quality 4MP beats cheap 4K any day. Some "real" security companies sell 2MP cameras at a similar price point as this camera.

Also I currently have a camera in my attic watching a mouse trap.
Caught 3 of those frickers so far.

You may have a problem (both with surveillance obsession and rodents)
Posted on 12/22/21 at 11:11 am to Hopeful Doc

I definitely do. Caught a 5th one on cam but he checked out the trap and ran away. I can see the vicinity that they're coming from. I have an unconditioned (so not really sealed) storage room that's detached from the house but the roof is shared. Not sure how to stop them from entering there without significant renovations. I also have 3 big oaks that hang over the house, so I'm not sure that's even worth it. I'll probably keep playing this game for a few weeks, then if I still have a problem I'll call a pro.
As for the surveillance obsession, I'm trying to build a business out of it so I kind of have to be obsessed. Not sure if those of you who pop into this thread are quite this interested, but in case you are I'll update once I've started my open source Protect clone that will work with any ONVIF cam.
