Wise folks of the tech board, my son who is 13 has saved for a year to get his own gaming pc. I’m not a computer guy much less a gamer but he is. But it’s his money and he’s a great kid and straight A student who is dedicated to school and year round swim so I feel like if he saved for it he can have it. He likes to play Minecraft and call of duty. I’m reading it’s much cheaper to build one rather than buy pre built so I’d like to see if folks could recommend a parts list. He has a mouse, keyboard, headset already. Need a tower and monitor. 1500$ budget. TIA.

What resolution? 1080p? 1440p? 4k? Refresh rate?

As stated in another similar thread, I would advise him to wait several months into next year to do the build. The best components are currently in short supply and pricy.

I think for $1,500, including a monitor, this would be my build with a focus on Minecraft and CoD. But, for full disclosure, I felt like I had to make some fairly hard choices, so this build, more than most, is one I would be inclined to revisit as sales occur/prices drop/etc:

This video card may blow that price up.
From my understanding bitcoin miners have caused the price of better ones to skyrocket and it's reverberating costs throughout even lesser models. To the point of making the desirable hard to get.

RTX 3xxx cards are dog shite at crypto mining compared to purpose built alternatives. Availability is awful, but that’s because of consumer purchases and scalpers. But, if you’re patient and attentive, you can get your hands on one. I have a 3070 FE in my rig now that I bought for MSRP from Bestbuy.

However point was graphic cards and their availability might be an issue at the moment. Just went through this myself with a ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1650 Super Advanced. And (no)it wasn't for gaming but just to push 4k at above 60hz across multiple displays without going immediately obsolete.

Newer graphics cards and Ryzen 5000 series CPUs are damned near impossible to get right now.

They were damned near impossible to get two months ago. They are really annoying to get now, but if it’s something you care about getting done, you can get one if you are persistent. It might take a couple weeks of off and on attempts, but I don’t know anyone who has been actively trying to buy a gpu who doesn’t at least have one on order. And the only people still fighting for cpus are the ones who doggedly want a 5900x/5950x.

5600x on Amazon has started coming in stock a LOT more this week. 5800x is obviously the weird CPU of the bunch in that it doesn't fit with the price between the 5600x and 5900x, but still its routinely in stock.

Yup yup. Now, you still can't just buy one whenever you want, but if you sign up for stock alerts, they are now routinely coming in stock every few days, and staying in stock for 15+ minutes at a time instead of the 15 seconds that they were a month ago. If it matters to you, you can get one.
Which is why I don't understand why people keep coming asking for time sensitive build advice and people keep telling them to wait. If you're looking at an upgrade of your current system and don't want to fight the masses, sure, hold off. But availability is now good enough that there is no reason to discourage someone from trying to spend a few weeks trying to pick up a gpu and cpu, and if they can, buy the rest. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but it isn't even approaching "impossible" at this point.
