That's what the AT&T store told me. This was about a year ago.

You can go on the att website and see that cellphones are listed with their per month price or full price. They won't let you buy one without having a service plan too though.

Do you get an unlocked phone or are you still fricked as far as that goes?

You can there just doesn't tend to be as many deals on them.

After you pay for it in full it will be unlocked. I think you can buy direct from Apple if you're getting an iPhone, and activate it on any carrier you wish to after you get it.

The price of contracts went down when the Next plan was introduced. It's a wash. You used to pay it by the month over the two years in increased service price. Now you pay it until the phone is paid for. But you get a lower price after it's paid for if you keep the phone.

The Next plan is interest free and I think it's required for all plans. AT&T won't let you buy a phone outright anymore. At least that's what they told me.
Huh? They won't let you give them money?

Maybe everyone here is young or something.. once upon a time you'd get a great deal on a phone when you signed a contract and the rates were the same regardless of if you brought your own phone or not

Have you read the thread?
The point is you were never getting "a great deal" on a phone. Instead, you were always paying monthly installments for phones whether you should have been or not.

I would not try to get an unlocked phone from AT&T. I went through a nightmare earlier this year with AT&T locking a phone I didn't even buy from them then refusing to unlock it.
I was on AT&T but decided I wanted to keep my options open in the future, so I bought an unlocked model iPhone from Best Buy. Bought it online and picked it up in store at customer service. Got it home and put my AT&T SIM card in. A few weeks later when I decided to try a different carrier, it was locked to AT&T. I didn't know it until my phone number was already transferred to the new carrier, so now I had a phone that wouldn't work anymore.
Since I had no working phone I had to go to the AT&T store and talk to them, of course they couldn't do anything. I demanded they let me use their store phone to call the AT&T customer service number so that I could have someone unlock it. I explained the situation and they told me it would be unlocked within 24 hours. Next day I received an email saying my unlock request was denied. Went back to the AT&T store, called them again, they said it must have been in error, they will put in another unlock request and escalate it this time. Next day, denied again. For a third time, I went back to the AT&T store, called them again, they said they'd put in another unlock request and this time it'll be a super special escalation and they promised it would be unlocked. And no, they couldn't put me on the line with anyone who could actually make the decision to unlock so I could explain to them. Again, next day got an email saying it was denied. Meanwhile the store manager gave me a free 1 month prepaid GoPhone SIM card with a new number so that I could at least have a goddamn phone and wouldn't have to keep coming back and bothering people in his store.
In the end I had to contact the Office of the CEO and demand to speak with executive support in order to get it resolved. The woman I spoke to acknowledged that their system will lock some unlocked phones and they're aware of it but in the mean time the only way to get it fixed is to call the Office of the CEO.
Long story short, if you want an unlocked phone, don't put an AT&T SIM card anywhere near it.

The only downside to bringing unlocked Android phones to At&t is the lack of HD voice/VoLTE support.
