External drive for TV recommendation

Should I get a powered or non-powered external HD for a Sony Bravia? 
My DVD player crapped out and I'm ripping discs to MP4s that I would like to load on a drive.

I use WD elements external. I think it's powered.

Going forward I'd look in to Plex or similar. Instead of having a drive hanging on a TV that is only accessible by that TV, you'd have your whole library available on all your devices.
