I'm trying to connect my laptop to an internet connection it hasn't used before. The PC i'm on is connected fine but my laptop is giving me that error message. I've spent the last few hours trying fixes from google searches but have had no luck. Anyone knows wtf is wrong and how to correct it?

Does the laptop have the pre-loaded OS or did you put your own on?

Might be a driver issue.

Are you trying to connect it to a home network or some workplace network?

uninstall the driver, and reinstall it? download the latest update from the manufacturer's website?

can it connect wirelessly? does the laptop have any kind of malware on it?

that does not look like a driver problem error message, do you use DHCP or static IPs?

Are you obtaining your IP and DNS automatically or manually? Do you know how to check that?

Not sure how much experience you have.

You're going to need to go into the adapter settings and tell us what you have it set to. If it's on manual and you don't have it like that for a specific reason, you'll want to change it to obtain IP address and DNS dynamically. LINK

Sounds like the IP is configured manually.

it was on obtain automatically but one of the fixes I found was to enter in manually but that didn't work. it is back on automatically currently.

to answer previous poster I know how to use a computer that's about it. i'm not very knowledgeable about technical aspects

If you've already tried to set a static IP and it didn't work I would go to the router settings and reset the DHCP. Depending on your router you might have to release/revoke the IP's.

Unplug the router, and plug it back in.

does it have any kind of filtering on it? like MAC address filtering?

Go on you PC and open up a Command Prompt. Type ipconfig at the prompt.

Write down your IPv4 address, subnet mask and default gateway under the section for your wireless LAN.

Do the same thing on your laptop.

Post the results here.

I figured out a way to make it work. I have to have the computer I want to use plugged into the router. then I have to make sure internet connection sharing is off on the computer I want to use and on on the other computer. I then unplug/replug the router. every time I want to switch computers I have to do this process. can only have one computer connected to the internet

probably some other way to do this but after 5 hours of trial and error this works. frick it

Well, good luck.

It certainly shouldn't be that way.

If your router is set as a DCHP server (default), then as long as you have the right SSID/password/encryption set on any device, it should connect wirelessly.

You habe something configured wrong. Sounds like you don't have the router setup at all. It is basically being used as a switch so that your 2nd computer can get an IP from the computer that has connection sharing on

You should not have connection sharing running on either. Your router should he doing that.

What does the back of your router look like? What device do you have plugged in to what port on the router?
