So, I had to change a light switch today at my home. Next to the light switch is a covered electrical plate. Curious, I unscrewed it to see what was back there. To my surprise I found something that I have never seen before. I don’t know what the hell it is. It is hooked up to the alarm system. It looks like it has some type of glass dome in it. It could have been part of the old security system, but it appears still hooked up so i’m curious what the heck it does.
Any ideas? What the hell is it? Many thanks!

Can you post a pic of the numbers on the outside?

Maybe an old motion sensor???

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and probably make myself look stupid to someone in the know but here it goes
Just looking at the components there is a capacitor, some resistors, and it looks like a couple of old bipolar junction transistors.
The way it appears to be arranged I would say it's probably some sort of amplifier with a high pass RC filter on it. It's likely that it did in fact belong to an alarm system and possibly served as an amplifier to the alarm speakers.
If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will be along to PW3N me soon.
ETA: Is that circular thing a speaker? Looks like a tweeter to me. Would confirm previous suspicion

That extra screw hole below the disc makes me think a special plate was over it which just had the disc showing.

Thinking about it now maybe it's just a n indicator light for central heat or something. Almost looks like a bulb behind all of that crap behind the disc.

Looks like a lens of some type - maybe a very old type of photoelectric beam? Is there anything fairly directly across from where this device is that could be or have been where a receiver could have gone? Since there are only two wires that I can see going to the unit, it would have to be the transmitter, if it was some type of beam.
It would be a very strange place to put one and the cover plate would have had to have a hole in it when it was working. The hole in the center of the unit looks like it may have been used to hold a cover plate on.
Do you know what all the zones on your alarm system are and how many zones that your system can handle? Are you sure that it is actually hooked up to your alarm system - Did you trace the wiring back to your alarm system?

The more I look at it I'm convinced it's a differential pair amplifier with a high pass RC filter. I don't know what the input and output could be if not audio related in such a case.

My first guess was some part of an intercom system.
