Echo/Dot. How many do I need?

Plan on trying some home automation with the black Friday deals listed for Amazon. I already have a Logitech hub and 2 Sensi thermostats which I wasn't aware were Alexa compatible so I figured I would get some Alexa enabled equipment a try it out. I also plan on getting the Schlage BE469 for my front door.
I figured I would need something downstairs for the Hub, Lock, and main floor thermostat, and one in the bedroom for the other thermostat. I would imagine I could get 2 Dots to accomplish this but I wasn't sure if there was value in getting an echo+dot instead of just 2 Dots

how many people in your house?
i have 5 dots.
- one on the back screened porch
- one in the pool room/kitchen/living room open area
- one in my 10yo daughter's room
- one in my 18yo son's room
- one in my 16yo daughter's room
we don't have one in our bedroom (yet) but i do have a $25/off coupon at amazon thanks to sonos so i'm mulling getting one more.
the best part aside from the home automation & sonos control is the intercom feature. we have a large house that is almost all on one level and the bedrooms are really out of shouting distance particularly when the kids have on headphones or are watching tv.
i can call any of them to dinner without having to go on a scouting expedition and my older son has a basement bedroom which is pretty much in a different world from the rest of the house.
i am building out my sonos so i have no need for a larger unit than the dot because i'm not listening to music on them.
they are very handy but my situation is probably more unique than others.
eta you're going to need to buy a smartthings or wink hub for that schlage lock.

ah. so Alexa doesn't work directly with the lock. It would work through a hub?

i love how false narratives get spread on here

go back & look at my original amazon rant.
go look at my wink, google, apple & sonos rants.
doesn't mean i don't own products by many of those companies, but that doesn't mean i have to deify them like some people want to do with tesla, apple & nest.
i call a spade a spade; if something is shitty i call it out.

If you don't have any Alexa products and don't have Amazon music I'd look into Google home. It's much smarter.

- no intercom function (at the moment)
- serious frickup with the wink home automation that required a complete reset to get stuff working again..not sure if that was on wink or google but it was a mess
- did not have the dot form factor (until now)
- does not (yet) integrate with sonos
- my brother kept buying the refurb dots for my kids on their birthdays because he didn't know what to get them

- didnt realize i had an 'extra' alexa with my fireTV until my 2yo found it
eta and i don't have amazon music so the lack of google music is the biggest problem for me at the moment.

actually yes this has been added.

not really. our phones were the dot form factor until the google home mini. but since he's just buying that's not really an issue since he can either use his phone or mini as dot equivalents.

integrates with anything that has a chromecast audio attached to it.
but lastly when i said it was smarter i was talking about the AI in general. It's not debatable that the GH's AI is light years ahead of alexa's. Alexa is even behind siri.
I don't have wink but it gave me zero issues with smartthings so probably wink is the culprit there.

meh, i disagree. i had google assistant on my phone but my phone never seemed to be anywhere nearby when i needed to turn a light off

right, but that excludes sonos although now that i just bought a playbar that plugs into my tv, i may be able to get this to work somehow.

oh i agree 100% with you here.

if you didn't have to completely redo your home automation devices like 3 weeks ago, then yes, its shitty wink causing that.

GH in my kitchen. Could control anything in my bedroom at night with my phone. I am getting a mini for free with my pixel 2xl purchase. But i wouldnt be bothering otherwise because my phone acts like a 2nd assistant.
