I am 75 and not very mobile. My wife and I have 3 dogs that go crazy with barking with a door knock or door bell ring. Trying to open the door just a crack is impossible and we have to go out through the garage to see who it is.

I am considering the acquisition of a smart/video doorbell that is hard wired over the existing door bell. I have a great nephew who is an electrician who can install it for me.

Let's assume I do all of this and someone comes to the door and uses the video door bell, how does the video get sent to me so we can talk to them or see them? Phone or computer? How would it work if they just knocked? Also for those who have this what brand/model would you suggest? Thanks for any information.

Will come as notification on your phone. If someone knocks you will be able to open app to talk to person. Most have motion sensor so it will tell you somebody is there with notification.

I had used Ring in the past, but switched to a Wyze doorbell that has a second package camera. Depending on what your doorbell ends up pointing at, the ability to shrink the motion detection area may come in handy. The model I bought can be battery powered or hard wired, in case your wiring is too old to support enough power.

It will be a notification, you tap notification and go to a live video feed. Usually there would be a speaker and mic button, mic would turn on both for a convo.
I use a custom system that notifies me before someone gets to the door triggered by a higher up camera for more precise positioning so there are no false alarms. Without something complicated like that, ring will still be a little “slow” but you won’t have to leave your chair to know if you want to answer the door or not and you have the option of telling them to wait or buzz off.

If there's a voltage issue, you can just replace the transformer for the door bell which is usually in the attic.

We have Ring cameras everywhere including the doorbell. My parents bought the Amazon Blink cameras and I do not recommend them at all. Very poor quality.

You can also get notifications and have it work through an Amazon Echo (Alexa). I had that set up for a while back when I worked from home. My home office was an addition we added on off of our deck, so I wasn't actually in the house to hear a doorbell, but it would alert me if someone rang the Ring doorbell.

If the doorbell is a ring, you can also communicate over an amazon Echo Show (it will do both at the same time).
