backlinks are a huge racket and i imagine it's the next frontier in fake media

no i'm not talking about BS backlinks in that post
i mean like my local media outlets selling me backlinks on their well respected site. the next generation of fake stories that are really ads, basically. look at post 18 for examples of what i'm talking about
the one thing that local news sites have that's incredibly valuable is their prestige in Google. they can print money by selling BLs

First and foremost make sure you claim your business on Google, have updated info on it, and a link to your site of you have one.
Amazing to me that in this day I'll go to maps and start browsing options after a search and people don't have shite on it. Restaurants really suck at this.

I know that Drupal has a setting in the performance section of the configuration that allows you to aggregate and compress css files, and aggregate javascript files. I believe this is Drupal's term for minifying those items.
I would assume there is a way to minify those items in WP as well - which makes them load faster.
I've done it on WP using a caching plugin, helped the Pagespeed rank of a client's site.

$300/mo extra for SEO
I think you're confusing SEO and SEM. SEO is built directly into your website content, structure, and linking strategy. SEM is actually marketing and paying for traffic to it.
I would focus on revising your site and the content within it based on some of the reccos made already (especially PJinAtl), and then run some monthly SEM tests with google adwords and/or FB...refine from there.

WP Rocket is a WordPress plug-in that fairly automatically speed tunes your WP site. It may not be enough to get the highest level speed scores you’re looking for, but it does knock out the low and medium hanging fruit in pretty short order and is well worth the $50 in the time it saves you tuning the site yourself.
