Does Apple have their own e-mail service?

Not an Apple id but an actual email account like gmail, yahoo, aol, etc?

iCloud.com, which is AppleID for most.

They use to have @me.com, but they killed off that service. Think they had @mac.com service too.

Yep. My wife and daughter have one. I signed up for iTunes with my old gmail account so that is still my Apple ID, but if you start fresh you can get an icloud.com email address.
