Yes, I ran a new line in my attic. Basically what I did (being that I didn't have a the proper fishing equipment) was buy 30 feet of coax cable. I fished my new cable up the through the attic with string, and then pulled the older one back down with string.
I installed a dual cable plate, with one cable going to my modem and the other to my TV.
I made my own antenna (cost about $5 if you have some 2x4s and a piece of plywood).
I catch ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS and others, but cut out the others because i don't want to have to surf through the ones I'll never watch.
I also currently have Sling TV (Canceling and going to Playstation Vue soon), which allows me access to watchESPN with ESPN, ESPN2, SECN+, etc.

Thanks TP.....that pretty much asnwered my question. I just need to do a little bit of research now for what I want as far as devices and subscriptions.
I briefly looked at slingtv for the first time just now during lunch and it seems more than enough and can even add on if wanted.

First off, you need to choose a device. Short term, it's probably intriguing to get the Fire TV Stick, but remember this is a purchase that you'll be using for years. I would definitely go with the Fire TV 2($100).
Also, before you consider upping the packages on Sling TV, consider that you have your dads (the one you're paying for) log in for Direct TV. Don't pay an extra $5 on Sling TV just for ESPNU and SECN when you already have those credentials for the watchESPN app. It's a waste of money, IMO.
Also, be aware that you can ONLY use Sling TV on one device at at time. So your kids/wife can't use Sling TV while you're watching the game. That's the downside of it. But if you're using watchESPN with your direct tv credentials, they could.
Look into playstation Vue. Here is a comparison to Sling LINK
Here is the thread where we are discussing Playstation VueLINK

I agree. Since this move to drop DTV was permanent for me and i'd be relying on the internet to watch tv, i ran ethernet wires to two of the bedrooms and the living room to plug into my Roku's.
I have a Roku Stick and a Fire Stick in bedrooms, and both are annoyingly slow compared to the hardwired Roku and occasionally reset themselves while i'm watching.

So, this Playstation Vue.....the "Playstation" part is just branding? You don't actually have to have a playstation console?

Check the thread
I'll answer your question because it might be informative for the OP. You just need a Playstation network account, which is free. If you don't have a Playstation 3 or 4, then a Fire TV is acceptable. The PS Vue app is available on all Fire TV devices, but I would recommend the Fire TV 2nd Generation (not the stick).

Thanks
I was reading through the thread and the vue site. All the info is a little overwhelming
, but this sounds like a directv killer to me.

What is overwhelming? I can help you out. Post in the Vue thread and I'll answer any question that I can.

does appletv access Playstation Vue?

No
PS3, PS4 and Fire TV (&Fire Stick)

You're welcome. I would suggest the Fire TV ($100) if you don't have a PS4. It's worth it, IMO.

I have always had success calling DirecTV and telling them the bill was too high. Getting $40 credit per month now. Every single time that my bill goes up I call them and bitch. The bill goes back down

Also, I guess it's time to look for an antenna. I need something discrete.
If you have a dish somewhere, there's a good chance you can just take the dish off and use the mast that's already installed to mount your antenna. I wasn't quite as worried about aesthetics as you, but I hopped on my roof and took the old dish off the mast, put the antenna on and re-used the cabling that was already run to the outlets throughout the house. Mine is pretty small (smaller than the dish) and it has picked up all the channels in our area (of course, ymmv on that one) without the need for an amplifier of any kind.

Same. Mine jumped to $110. I told them to cancel, even after they offered to drop it. No way I am paying $110 for TV, and an additional $60 for Internet.

This is exactly where I'm at right now. $117 for DirecTV and $65 for internet to be exact. I'm just still hung up on the $20 a month for the remainder of my contract.

Yeah, that's obviously a big deal if you've got a lot of time left. It's al part of the equation. I'm looking at it as well for my "break even" in that if I cut and stay cut until November, I break even. If I hate it, I have to stick with it until then to not lose money.

Yea I'm trying to do all of the calculations. My contract is up in November. Basically I'd be paying $160 up front to not pay $117 a month. Then I have to factor in the cost of what I get to replace it. I'm thinking vue at $30 a month.

Yeah my contract is up so I am about to pay way more. Thinking about just going with a cable/Internet bundle as I currently have dtv and xfinity Internet.
This is exactly the situation I am in now. DirectTV has just gotten too expensive for what I am getting over the last few months. I already have Comcast internet, I'll probably in the next month or two switch back to Comcast TV as well.

Does that antenna automatically move around depending what station you want or you have to do it yourself with the remote? I am looking for a good antenna i can put in my attic.
And do some of these otehr streaming services yall talking about stream in HD? I have a firebox with kodi that I havent fooled with much yet and I see some stuff in HD but usually only 720p and a lot of SD.
