Deregistering iMessage

Has anyone here gone on the apple selfsolve website and deregistered iMessage on their phone number?
I am curious how long this takes to kick in and whether I will get the old messages that people initially sent to me as iMessages before I went on there and switched.
I did a search on the OT and the Tech board but didn't see anything.
Thanks.

The government doesn't care about your wife telling you to get milk on the way home

I switched from an iPhone to the Galaxy but apparently you have to do this if you want Apple to release your number from iMessage's death grip

Do you still have your old iPhone?
If you have access to an iPhone, insert your SIM then activate iMessage. Once activated, deactivate iMessage again. This is to somehow trigger the registration and de-registration of your mobile number from iMessage service. If still not working, call AppleCare.
You may also lose any group text messages where users think you're still on iMessage

No, the old phone is gone. Some people have just been asking me why I've been ducking their texts and so would like to see what they had sent me.
I already did the remote deregistration or whatever from my laptop but I was mostly curious how long it takes to take effect.

gotcha
My experience with AppleCare requests is that they normally process my requests in 3 or less business days.
I manage about 200 iOS devices and sometimes have to have Apple release the activation lock after an employee turns it back in.
