The kids Bday is coming up in a week or 2. He'll be 12. Tonight he informed us that he'd REALLY like a drone for his bday. Any suggestions for a 1080 or 4k kid appropriate drone for around $200? He already has a remote control plane which he's pretty good at flying.

Thanks in advance.

DJI Mavic Mini

I looked and searched for “cheaper” drones, and they all had poor reviews or flight times. The DJI is great and uses a similar interface if he moves up to their more advanced drones.

This thread has come up a few times and I’ve recommended it every time.

Mavic mini +1. Had a similar budget and $200 gets you a toy. The mini is legit.

I would either go cheap like $50-80 for a manual controlled drone. Or buy the Mavic Mini. He'll crash out the cheap drone pretty quickly because that's what happens with those. The Mavic can be flown manually as well as has tons of protection when you make an error. Really no other drones can touch it when it comes to price and quality at that level.

He'll need a phone or tablet to fly it though.

Unless the kid is really into shooting movies or videos, I wouldn't bother with a drone for a kid unless it is a sport FPV drone. It will be sitting in the corner in a week because the kid will absolutely be bored of it.

Better off getting them a cheap RC plane or coaxial heli and save yourself some money.

No, he joined the school mountain bike team and wants to make videos for the team.

I’ve been real happy with this: amazon

It’s $270 so more than a bit above your range. Will need phone or tablet (like most). At least check out the brand (Holy Stone). They have cheaper stuff as well and I think they are a solid alternative to the DJI stuff.

I too started with RC planes. Drones for filming are super easy and boring to fly compared to a fixed wing, but I see your son wants to film. Good luck with it, hope he likes whatever you decide on.

Downhill or cross country and to follow them down the trail or long shots? You are gonna need to get him some cheaper FPV sport drones and get ready to start spending a fortune on replacement parts if he wants to keep up. DJIs and drones like that aren’t built to follow bikes. It’s more for cinematic shots and surveying.

The DJI FPV system though is pretty neat to put on a built sport drone.

There are a bunch of YouTubers that have videos for budget sport builds. I recommend watching some of those and build your own.

Cross country and I think the bulk of the shots will be from the Start/Finish areas. Mostly mass starts and a few kids coming in over the finish line.

But who knows at this point...

Thanks for that. With a $40 coupon, I think that might work as a starting point.

If you are spending that, youre better off going with the DJI Mavic Mini

If this is something he wants to keep doing, you are going to be upgrading as he gets older. May as well start him off getting used to the software and the user interface.

Yesterday was his B-Day. He loves it. After we finally got it linked, and took a short test flight, the first thing he asked to do was fly it over the house. I told him he had to log a little more flight time first.

I went with the Holystone one that was recommended above. He loves it. However, it's out of commission for a few weeks. He crashed it into the house and broke one of the arms. Of course the one we need is out of stock on Amazon.

I was able to find and order it off e-bay, it was supposed to be here in the next day or 2 but it hasn't shipped yet. (which is why Amazon >>> Ebay)

On the flip side, he's been working on his electronics merit badge. His counselor (yours truly) is a read hard-butt. He a technically passed off all the requirements, but I'm going to make him do the repair before I sign him off. It involves disassembly and soldering, so it's a good practical application of the skill he was supposed to have learned for this badge.
