I currently have a hardwired alarm system that uses cellular to communicate to the monitoring company (no landline at house). It is probably about 5 years old and has 2 key panels, 2 motion sensors, 8 windows, and 3 doors all hardwired to main box in my laundry room.

I want to make it smarter. Is there anything I can do? Has anyone done this to their “dumb” alarm?

I would like to at least be able to arm/disarm with app/remote and possibly Siri/Alexa/Google. I eventually want to add a smart lock on my door and would like to integrate this. Other wishes are one day adding cameras, but am okay with those being a separate system. Any other feature recommendations that I may not know about is appreciated. TIA

Bump all in this topic. I'm in the exact same boat and your setup is literally EXACTLY the same as mine.

Do you plan on maintaining this service. I'm not positive but I think you have to have service in order to send commands to the system via text. A few minutes setting up an IFTTT account and creating applets is the easiest way to control your current system remotely/with your phone.

Not sure about Siri but IFTTT can be integrated with Alexa and Google.

Nice. About time there was a reasonably priced solution.

Check your panel to see what brand/model you have. I have a Honeywell Vista 20P that I added an EnvisaLink module to. It 's about $100, but no monthly fees. Allows you to arm/disarm via website (no app, but I have a shortcut to a mobile website on my phone). Also sends email and txt alerts including power outage and internet outage.

Panel Compatibility:
DSC PowerSeries (1555, 1555 MX, 1575, 5010 (832), 5020 (864), 1616, 1832, 1864)
Honeywell Vista Panels (Vista20P, 21iP, 15P, 10P, 128P, and 250P)

Based on this:
See how simple it is to replace your old alarm system board with a Konnected Alarm Panel and instantly gain access to all your wired sensors in your Smart Home

Konnnected does not allow for home monitroing except through smart things hub. The "Arduino" boards replace your existing alarm panel. You reuse existing wired sensors in your house.

If you want to keep your existing panel and add self monitoring the envisalink posted above or there's a similar product, alarm decoder.

I just installed a Vista 20p with envisalink at my house.

Forgot to add, with the envisalink you can integrate it into home automation as well. I run a raspberry pi with Home Assistant but I think it also works with smart things. By tying it to your home automation you can then use the alarm sensors for triggers.

I signed on with Vivint about 6-7 years back and they used, at the time, a control panel by 2gig called the Go control panel which controls zwave stuff. I know that some people would purchase that panel themselves and have an unmonitored system.

At any rate, they were able to use our existing hardwired system (just changing out the panels) and added on wireless to wherever we wanted. It’s interfaced with alarm.com that has an Alexa skill. I initially used that for voice control but transitioned to Wink in the last 1-2 years for all of my smartphone stuff.
