This only started happening after I installed a new hard drive on the PC. Is this a sign that the power supply is about to fail, or did I do something wrong when I installed the new hard drive?

It sounds like the new drive is putting on an additional strain on an old power supply and your system settings is set to restart on system failure....so it appears to be restarting randomly. This happen to me. I put in a new 750 watt PS and all problems went away.
Hope this helps......

Check your system log to see the error code for the failure before you start spending money.

Could be anything overheating basically.

Thanks for this. It's highly likely it is power related, given the log.

Also check that the CPU fan is working well and the heat sink below is not clogged with dust. Nearly every time I've had issues like this, it's heat related.

I've changed the CPU fan and the heat sink from the stock versions, and I'm pretty sure it isn't that. The stock model comes with only a 350 w power supply. I've ordered a new one as well as a UPS so this won't happen again, hopefully.

A UPS wont help at all in a situation like this

Have you checked if it’s getting hot?

There’s some free temp programs to check it. I think coretemp is one?

I'm using HWMonitor. It shows the temps at 88F.

A UPS only helps when you lose power to the PC. If your PC crashes or has random restarts, a UPS won't do anything to help since it's likely a problem with the PC

That's way too high for idle usage and even high for heavy use.

You want to be in the 30-40s idle and 70-80 for load

Those are the temps inside the case, apparently. HWMonitor shows the CPU is running at 56F. Coretemp shows the CPU running at 14C, which I think is 56F as well.

All my temps are within the min/max values on HWMonitor. No idea what the hell is going on at this point.
