My whole family is an apple family and I recently got the nVidia Shield TV Pro. If you have the $$, the AI Upscaling is amazing especially if you have say YouTube TV or any other streaming live tv service. It basically AI upconverts your 720p or 1080 signal to look damn near 4k. Yea YTTV has 4k for an extra $$ but it's only a few channels for a few events weekly/monthly. This does it natively (if turned on) and you can basically cancel your 4k sub.

This upconverts literally every app, HBO, YTTV, Amazon, etc. That alone made it worth the $$ for me and I have 0 other Android devices in my house.

Not to mention you can play some games on it with either Stadia, GeForceNow or even side load the Beta version of XBox Cloud Live.

I have a HiSense with Android TV built in, similar to a Roku or Fire TV. I do not have a separate device like the Shield to attach to the TV.

I like that it is built in (with built in far micophone for Google assistant). I decided to go with it because I was buying a new TV and Roku had just decided to go to war with Youtube and I was afraid I would not be able to access Youtube TV from a Roku TV. So far, it has worked great, and I like the interface of Android TV.

This has recently changed. The nVidia Shield TV and Pro both have Google TV now.

The *ONLY* difference is that if you have YTTV and the Chromecast with Google TV, there is a "LIVE" tab that shows the YTTV channels in an old school menu layout.

The nVidia Shield TV/Pro does not have that, currently. I don't miss it though, I just launch the damn app when I know I am gonna watch live tv.

It is nice, no lie, and I'm kinda an apple fanboi. It has a slider to do a side by side comparison on real time TV and it'll show the difference and it's pretty noticeable with a large/4k TV.

With things like Soccer, I love it. I can't wait to see what it looks like for CFB. Even my wife noticed it on a random "Ted Lasso" episode and she never gives a flying F about picture and/or sound.

It "can" but it isn't native/automatic. You need to install 3rd party apps to switch between refresh rates and match content. It definitely gives you the ability but it isn't the most user friendly option.

Roku's refresh rate match works across the most apps at this point in time. Right now, I think Netflix is the only app that doesn't work properly with Roku's automatic refresh rate matching. You can still set the roku output to 24p manually for netflix but it takes a lot of button pushes to get that done.

Chromecast w/ GoogleTV has the ability since it is on Android but so far there are no apps that use the native ability to change refresh rate output. Everything is output at 60Hz regardless of source. 3rd party refresh rate apps dont work yet. You can manually set the system output to 24Hz if desired but like Roku, it takes a lot of remote button pushes to get there.

Your TV can have a significant impact in this decision. What TV do you have?

If your TV can detect 24p content from a 60Hz signal, then the refresh rate issue may not matter at all. In that case all 3 devices deliver superb picture quality. I have the chromecast w/GTV, Roku Ultra 4800, Roku Ultra 4660, Amazon Fire Stick 4k and my BIL has a Shield.

The shield is the Cadillac and has the most capability but it isn't always user friendly and not all the apps are developed well. The shield is the only option if you want to watch or listen to anything with lossless or HD audio.

As far as simple/easy navigation, Roku wins hands down. You can simplify the home screen very easy. It isn't cluttered with all sorts of suggested content. It will show only the apps shortcuts you want and you click the app you want to watch. My 4 y/o can navigate a Roku with zero issues.

If you are looking for more sophisticated navigation/home screen then the Chromecast or Shield are the better options. They will have more suggested content from apps you install and have logged in to. You can directly access some videos from services w/out having to go to the app first. Some people really like this.

If you have YoutubeTV, then the chromecast is a nice option. Even though Chromecast and Shield are running the same Android TV OS, chromecast has an integrated page where you can see your YTTV live guide w/out going to the YTTV app. It also gives you access to YTTV DVR from the home page.

I have two Shields. They are very good. The A.I. upconversion technology will blow your mind, it's so good.

Also, if you're into serving up your own videos or rips, the Shield Pro is great for use as a Plex server.

yea i have roku right now and love it and honestly prolly stick with it but I wanted to know the best since this tv will be used alot for sports. Thats the big thing. I want best sports picture. I love the layout of roku and yea my 5 year old works it no problem.

but i dont want something complicated either were only i can work it.

and i honestly do not want to have to go back and fourth to yttv through the youtube app because roku wont let me install it anymore.

For my current devices i will be using on the other TVs this isnt an issue, as it is already installed. But this would be a new device.

after the person on page 1 pointed it out, i tried it. its only 1 additional click.

launch youtube on roku, scroll down to 'youtube tv' and click.

done, you're in the channel guide.

not a big deal at all.

It appears your TV can detect 24p content in 60Hz signals according to rtings.com LINK

So you probably dont need to worry about refresh rate features. Just pick the one you like the best unless you need HD Audio (Dolby TRUEHD, DTS HD-MA).

The YTTV/Roku spat is definitely an issue worth noting. I had YTTV installed before the spat started. I'd be curious if I could install the app to new Roku devices since I already have the app in my Roku account.
