If you're big on the Amazon ecosystem, I would go with Firestick. I ended up with a Roku TV and it's great so far. If I bought a separate device, though, it would probably be a Firestick.

(Roku has me rethinking things, though - the interface is great - simple remote - zero complaints so far.)

I have a Firestick in the den and a Chromecast in the bedroom. Personally I like the firestick better but it helps if you have Amazon Prime.

Fire stick definitely. If you can afford the fire tv, you'll enjoy the additional processing power and faster navigating through menus and such. You can also plug in a usb/wireless keyboard into the fire TV.

Going to get a fire stick today. What should I be doing setup wise? What is Kodi?

I own both, and if you take Kodi out of the equation, I prefer the way chromecast works. Chromecast's biggest black eye is lack of Amazon instant video support.

Well I have a chromecast, but I'm gonna put it outside. So what should I do for living room? Another chromecast or fire stick?

Kodi is an app/software that lets you play lots of media through, for example, your firestick (lots of youtube videos on "how to") - works like a media server with expanded capabilities.

Sort of like Plex with Roku (and now other devices) or PS3 Media Server.

I thought I read your PC needs to be hard wired to your TV. Is this necessary to use kodi?

Kodi is meant to be ran on a computer/supported-device that is directly connected to the TV by a video cable.

You've exhausted my knowledge of it - I'm not a user. However, I'd be shocked if there wasn't a wifi/DLNA protocol to have it work - maybe you have to have it wired at setup but I wouldn't even speculate on that.

It would plummet it's useability rating for me, if true (and I have a hardwired connection for my PS3, which is my main display's media server - although that is preference, I have had it wireless in the past.)

no thats the whole point of the fire stick you sideload kodi on it. the firestick is plugged into an outlet and a hdmi port.

if you want to get a taste of kodi and have an android phone download kodi from the app store and follow some of the basic instructions for downloading the video add on apks

I have a few movie apps like playbox HD that work well with chromecast. I assume you can get the same functionality with the fire stick thought kodi?

Ah, yes. I'm a dumbass. Lol. The fire stick is the Kodi connection. Gonna grab one and sideload kodi. Thanks for the info.

FYI

The Amazon firetv app can act as a remote and a keyboard, which is extremely handy for setting up KODI because you have to type some things.

Now that I've side loaded kodi, what video addons should I have? Are there any HD new release movie apps available?

Easiest thing is to just add the super repo (https:// srp.nu -- without the space) and take a look at those addons. Genesis and IceFilms will probably more than cover your source for streaming new releases.
