Car audio head units

I'm looking to replace the double din factory head unit in my truck. I don't want one with navigation but do want one with android auto so I can run Google maps on the receiver screen. In crutchfield I'm seeing models that are just multimedia receivers that don't play cd's and models that have a dvd slot. I don't play cd's in my truck so that's not a concern, just wondering why I would want one that plays dvd's? Is that for vehicles that came with screens in the backseat, which my truck doesn't have? Just trying to figure out what the advantage of that would be.

Crutchfield has great customer service. Give them a call and they will help you out.

You can bypass the parking brake lockout and watch DVD’s on the screen if you wanted, or run RCA to an external screen.

The Alpine iLX-W650 is a pretty good deal at $299. It just became available this week so supply is low. You would also need a parking brake bypass.
Crutchfield Alpine ilx-w650
Amazon parking brake bypass

You can override them to play video while not in park but unless you're watching a lot (don't do this while driving) I don't see much need for DVD when you can just stream.

Do I still need the parking brake bypass to stream Netflix from my phone to the receiver or is that just for dvd?
This is the receiver I'm looking at Alpine Head Unit

I just got an Atoto A6. Instead of Android Auto. It's a fully Android head unit and can also screen mirror your phone instead of select apps like android auto.

I'm looking to do the same as OP and have been poking around on Crutchfield. How hard is it to install one yourself? I've never done it before, and I'm not a complete idiot. I was going to just go to a local shop and have it done, but I've gotten the Crutchfield rec several times now.

Yes, Some Alpines won't even let you access some of the sound system setting while moving. The bypass is real easy to hook up. Youtube has several how to videos. It's only four wires.

Depends on which car/truck. Some are pretty easy. Some are very difficult.

Not hard at all. If you buy from Crutchfield, they'll send you parts and instructions specifically for your vehicle...including how to disassemble the dash. Maybe an hour of work for most.

I just bought one. I'm about to replace the head unit and component speakers.
Oh and congrats on the future 200,000 mile + vehicle!

Is that Apple CarPlay? If so, how did you get watch espn on there?

Are aftermarket CarPlay radios just like the ones that come in newer vehicles?

Yeah, just watched a Youtube on how to do it, and I think I'll let the local stereo shop do it. Doesn't look that hard, but looks like something I'll definitely frick up and spend all day one Saturday doing.
