I don't need to stream 4k.
ISPs have set data caps that seem sufficient for most today. I don't expect those caps to see regular increases. Do you?
Per capita bandwidth use has grown by about 20X over the last 10 years. It is expected to grow about 3X over the next 5 years. Don't expect your household to be using 3X as much data in 5 years as you do today? I do. And your ISP does. And they have prepared for that with their data caps that will force you to make a choice.

literally they are rewarding young single people who won't go anywhere near that cap and punishing families (like mine) who have to set netflix to the lowest quality setting available to limp along until the end of the month.
we aren't even doing anything particularly crazy. just the normal life of a family of 6 consuming videos.

I REPEAT I HAVE TO SELF-POLICE MY TV WATCHING HABITS AND SET MY TV QUALITY TO 360P OR I'LL BE PUNISHED FINANCIALLY

pathetic.

No I won't. Like I said, I do 4k on Amazon, not a big deal. HD is fine unless I am forced to use 4k.

how do you know?

do you literally go into amazon each time and say 'no, no..don't send me the best quality picture..transcode that shite from 4K'

You don't stream Prime? The app recognizes if you have a 4k TV and offers you 4k content.
Surprised you don't know that, but then you LOL me! LOL back at you Cad

How to find HDR content in Amazon Prime Video
Amazon may have beat Netflix to the HDR party, but it’s just as tricky to find HDR-ready content in its Prime Video app. Like Netflix, the best it offers is an HDR logo next to selected titles. At present, some of the available titles include:

thanks for making my point for me. so you admit amazon is already serving you 4K automatically.

Ah, I can select the non 4k version of a movie and show. I am not forced to view it in 4k.

quote:OK bro. You said you already view some content in 4k, so when the time comes in a couple years you will have to choose the degraded regular HD experience in order to not blow through your data cap, OR feel compelled to sign up for cable TV again. That's all I'm saying.
No I won't.

degraded regular HD
Are you saying they are going to lower the bitrate of HD streaming? I am quite happy, as long as I am using data to do it, in using the current HD format.
If what you are saying is there will be an effort one day to make HD quality lower than what it is now to force 4k content than I agree with you.
Really, only 4k I would want in its current state is for sports.

Are you saying they are going to lower the bitrate of HD streaming?
Come on, man. When HD came out, it was "nice to have". Now it's the norm and watching SD video is "degraded". I'm saying in a few years 4k will be the norm, and regular HD will be considered "degraded" video quality.
quote:And we were all "quite happy" with regular old SD video until HD became more common. It's all relative.

I'm trying really hard to be polite here, but it seems like you're doing this on purpose.

No I am not trolling you. Obviously there is a huge difference between 480p and 1080p as there is for 1080p vs 4k.
I am not a video geek and also not an audio geek. I am quite happy with Xm Radio and don't need uncompressed audio to enjoy music.
But I will give you this, if 4k would become the standard as HD is now, I would have to re-evaluate if I had to work hard to use HD.
We are not even close to being there yet.

do you even notice when shows are in 4K these days?
I'm a little snobby when it comes to it. If I'm in front of my 4k tv, I search out HDR/Dolby Vision shows and movies.

As for being close to your data cap, you're halfway there already. A 20% growth rate in average data consumption is extremely conservative, so your data use is likely to double in less than 4 years. Many will double their use in less than 3 years, especially those who will be more "liberal" in their 4k viewing than you are. And it's not just video streaming. Most of us have automatic cloud backup of our phone photos.. a family can easily run up a few gigs from just that. Some people play games or have kids who do, that can easily be tens of gigs per month (and there's always more and more DLC at bigger and bigger sizes). Many are installing security cams with cloud storage. Smart devices are poised to explode, so that's a bunch of internet chatter running up the GB's. Phone updates, more GB's. Check back with us in a couple years and report your monthly usage.
I'm just saying the data is going to keep flowing more and more, and these arbitrary data caps have been set up as an anti-competitive measure to favor the ISPs' own video offerings rather than them having to actually compete on price and service with other services.

You won’t get me disagreeing 4K content consumes much more data at this point unless they come up with some new compression which does not degrade the video quality.
No idea where we will be in 3-5 years and what the ISP’s policies will be.
Having Directv Now I would not be suprised if AT&T allows unlimited data if you use their internet somewhere down the road.
My daughter is on her tablet streaming quite a bit too.
So for now, DTVN, YouTube, Amazon, Hulu, channel apps and quite a few internet enabled devices and that is where we are at. 550gb per month
Also, with Netflix you have to pay for 4K content or you don’t even see it. I do not pay for 4K content.

I've got a 1080p capable TV but set my streaming gear to 720p.
