Can we discuss an Android competitor for iMessages?

I have been an Android user for a few years now, and the only feature of iOS I ever miss is iMessage. The ability to share high quality video easily, without requiring the use of another app is the only feature I really cared about.

I've been reading alot on the progress (or lack thereof) of RCS and was curious to get the boards opinion on that.

I personally feel that if Google implemented sms fall back to Allo and made that the default messenger, it would be able to satisfy everything that iMessages does.

If allo had sms fallback it would be almost the perfect messaging app. but it doesnt and they dont seem to have any plans to implement it. so its basically pointless.

I will never understand why they didn't have sms capabilities from the start, and why they have refused to implement it. Allo is an absolutely beautifully designed app and I would immediately make it my default messenger if I could. As it stands, I don't know one person who actually uses it. My wife and I use WhatsApp to send videos of our kids between her iPhone and my Samsung, but I hate how WhatsApp looks and works. Other than that, everyone I know just uses iMessages or a default Android sms .

I didn't want to start a new thread, but a buddy of mine has an android and has not been getting texts. He thought it may have something to do with iPhones and iMessage. We have a group text going, 2 of us have iPhones the other 2 Android. The other android guy has been getting texts there and responding. But the first guy hasn't. Then he realized he wasn't getting texts at all. He would see replies back to something he sent, but friends and family were sending him stuff and he wasn't seeing it. Any thoughts? He's on VW, not sure which phone though. Of course he is in IT so I told him to turn it off and back on already.

co-worker has been complaining about not receiving texts on her note 5. Just seemingly happened out of the blue recently. She's with AT&T though. Crazy

Yeah I'm not sure if his is a Note 5. I think it is a Samsung though. The other guy has an LGV10. All happened in the last couple of weeks. We were trying to set up a time for us all to get together, and we hadn't heard from him in 2-3 days, which is unlike him. I sent him a solo text outside of the group. Never heard back. He finally called me the next day and told me he wasn't getting them, and didn't know how long it had been going on. The last one he read off to me was from 4-5 days earlier in the group, so he had missed several back and forth.

I wont even be part of a group text. For group messaging most of my friends use groupme.

I have a s6 active with at&t and have never had a problem with not receiving texts. In fact, my wife's iPhone 6s will have problems every once in a while where texts from other iPhones won't come through and she will have to reboot her phone and then it works fine.

I've never had any issues with group messages either. I started using Textra when I first got the phone because I didn't like the stock Samsung messenger. Then once Android messages started improving I began using it and it has been flawless. It's just the fact that I don't get the enhanced messages.

I also feel that if I could use Allo as my default messenger, I could convince more people, including iPhone users to download it.

Yeah i'd use android messages if at&t ever enabled RCS. But they're pretty useless.

ya iMessage is the one thing apple has over android

i dont think there is a solution as long as android keeps their software open source

Do you ever see RCS universal profile being implemented across the big 4 carriers

Yeah eventually. AT&T apparently is trying to do their own RCS and suck at it. I think it only works on certain devices which makes it pointless.

would this work for an imessage type network?

- force every Android user to have a gmail account that they linked to their cell phone number.

- not allow Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and every other cell phone brand out there decided to force their own texting app as the default

Hangouts had the potential to be Android's answer for iMessage but then Google all but killed it and started fragmenting everything.

Same here as really missing Imessage now that I have small children and always sending pictures and videos to my parents. I use textra and have been patiently waiting for google to release their API for RCS implementation.

Google needs to start throwing it's weight around to get these carriers to implement RCS. Maybe let them know that major Android updates would be delayed to that carrier until they come up with a plan to get on board

I mean it's not like you can't still send pictures and videos.

Yeah, the videos are terrible, and trying to convince iPhone users to download WhatsApp, or Allo, or Google photos so we're can share an album is almost impossible. Luckily my wife will use WhatsApp and that's who I share the most with.

But I do feel like a loser when I have a random buddy send me a video or something and it's so grainy I can't even respond.
