One of my closest friends is now in a memory care institution, it is so sad to see his decline, but I try to do everything I can to make him comfortable and ease his anxiety. His last vestige of enjoyment is watching TV, a lot of Netflix westerns and I know he'd like to watch some sports.

The problem is that he doesn't remember how to find what he enjoys, he can't change stations and I can't ask the staff to run down to his room. He has a Cox small cable box, I'm trying to figure out a way to change his stations remotely. I asked Cox, got a big DUH, I'm pretty good with tech equipment, but I think I'm missing an obvious solution.

Help if you can.

Maybe power his TV with a Roku stick instead. You can re-order the main menu to put his favorite stations on the homepage where he can see them.

Changing channels remotely is a bigger challenge. A Roku app can change the channel on a device that is connected to the same Wifi network. This is probably way too complicated, but you could install a VPN host (router, NAS, etc.) in his room and connect it to his Wifi. Then, you can initiate a VPN connection from your phone to the device in his room, and then use the Roku app on your phone to change the channel. It's pretty convoluted though.

Thanks for helping, I thought about doing to same thing with a Firestick, but if I screw up the TV input setting, I'll have to drive 14 miles to fix it. And like you said, they have to be on the same wifi network.

Actually you got me to think of an easier, obvious solution. I have several laptops, set one up as the video source through an HDMI cable, then use Anydesk to control his video, Netflix, ESPN or whatever.

Out of curiosity, how do you know when to change channels remotely? How do you know you won't be changing the channel when he's enjoying something?

How about a "smart" IR blaster. Then you can control his tv from your phone anywhere in the world.

His wife has a sitter cam in his room, she keeps an eye on him, he'll talk to the TV, he had always been a huge LSU sports fan, I know he'd like to watch the CWS.

The home he is in is supposed to be one of the best, it is certainly expensive enough, but if you don't keep a watchful eye, he can get neglected. One day recently they forgot to go get him for breakfast.

Thanks, that may be an even simpler solution.
