For those of you who have done this, did you erase the HDD and to a clean os install upon receiving?
I'm considering purchasing a used / refurb machine but I'm paranoid what could be on the machine, even when the listings state that it's comes with a clean install.

It cant hurt. I just read a Wired article about invisible malware, and I can see the concern.

If it's a windows 10 machine it is easy enough to reset.
If it is an older machine put a clean install of Linux on it.
I got a Lenovo X220 three years ago. It has the distinction of being the last laptop made with a real keyboard.
Put a 1TB SSD in it running Linux Mint and it's still running as well as a new off the shelf machine.

I had one of these, great laptop.
Though I like my Macbook Pro (mid-2014) and surface laptop keyboards just fine

I have bought several used i5 laptops lately and they have been solid machines.
On each, I replaced the HDD with SSDs so data on the drive that came with it wasn’t an issue.
256g SSD is dirt cheap right now. Picked a couple up for $30/each.

I purchased a refurbished HP 6300 last year. It didn't come with an OS installed on it which it didn't care about. See if your can find one like that if you're worried.
You should always wipe it clean or install a new HD on it just to be safe.
