I do a lot of research so i need as many tabs open as possible. I have an old cpu now that works well however after about 10 tabs it slows down and crashes. As far as memory would 8X2 be faster than say 16X1.. and what about a Dell i see that has 4X1+8X1... spending up to 1K for the tower

It’s probably lack of ram slowing you down if you mainly notice it by opening browser tabs.

I wouldn’t get less than 16gig.

Your post is a bit to unpack, but:

Don’t buy less than 16gb of ram, and two sticks is better than one, as it gives you access to dual channel.

In addition to the RAM recommendation I would recommend an i5 or faster CPU.

Are you looking to buy a new CPU or a new PC? If you are looking for recommendations on a CPU we need to know what motherboard or socket or CPU you currently have in order to recommend a CPU that will fit, if there is even a better one available. If you are looking to buy a whole new PC I would be looking at PCs with an 11th gen i5 or i7 processor, NVMe SSD at minimum for your boot drive (you can pair a smaller one of these with a cheaper larger non-NVMe SSD or HDD) and 16GB RAM. Then add whatever else you need, discrete graphics, bluetooth/wifi, etc. to that.

Ok, so I'm a little confused:

Are you buying a cpu, or are you buying a new computer?

ETA: What Fat Batman said. Except I'm at the point that I'm pretty much never suggesting HDD for anyone's actual rig. If you need that much space, build a NAS.

Ok, slow down. What, exactly, are you doing with this machine? And no, lots of research is not sufficiently specific :p

yeh, lots of research as in having multiple tabs open at once. I've never had a use for my computer other than basic web browsing so this Intel Core Duo has been good enough for the basics. Obviously it's not powerful enough to keep up when i have 20+ tabs open. slows things down to a halt basically. Judging from the responses, looks like i need more RAM.. I dont care about boot speed, photo editing, read-write time etc.. I think i just need more memory to do what i need to do. which is why i chose a system with 16 GB dual channel.. thx for the response

Overkill if all the OP is doing is "browsing the frick out of the internet".

Get an 11th gen core i3 with a 4C/8T processor with 16 gb of ram. Problem solved.
