I see a smartthings, "2nd generation hub....is it all the same or is the 2nd generation an upgrade?
If all the same, I'm about to pull the trigger on the $49 on Amazon

I got a SmartThings a few weeks ago when it went on sale. I'm so overwhelmed with where to begin.

I'm in the same boat. My wink v1 is still chugging along with my Harmony Hub + Alexa and smart lights.

It's strange, I had someone tell me the other day they moved from smart things to wink b/c something to do with not liking the ST smart lock integration. This person has MULTIPLE houses completely automated. Wish I had more info on the things he didn't like. It made me happy that I chose wink(I have wink hub 2). I am happy with wink so far and wink has showed a flurry of new features, and products supported lately.

Can I do most of this stuff anyway if I own an Amazon Echo? Why would I want to add a smartthings hub?

There are 3 levels of Home Automation.

The first level is connecting your light bulb to your alexa or you phone and turning it on and off when you want too. Most people are in the group.

The second level is setting up your bulb/switch/anything else to turn on and off on a schedule. I really am unsure if alexa can do this. Im rather certain she would be able to deal with doing this for more than one bulb. Some people have this set up for a light light or an outside light.

The third level of home automation is truly what home automation is supposed to be. You home reacting based on your actions. Very few people have this setup in their home. Examples would be a light turns on when you walk into a room then turns off when your exit. IMO true home automation is great in theory but there are sometimes you wouldnt want an action to trip off every time you do something.

I did the exact opposite once smartthings updated their smartlock app.

ST>WINK and i was a huge wink supporter. CAD still wont talk to me.

see previous post. having some switches isnt automation. Im in the belief that simle hubs like this would not be abloe to truly automate a house. There needs to be more computing power and programming than these could handle.

Having worked with both i feel Wink is more Applish where you can only do what Wink allows you to do. ST has the ability for you to write your own code to do basically anything you want and create apps and routines that you normally couldnt do.

This is what made me give Smartthings a go. I needed to make the hall light perform different functions at different times, and it took way too many robots and frustration. Hoping smartthings can help out in that area. I won't be abandoning Wink though...probably

i dont know how to write that stuff but i have copied others code from github for certain things. I still have my wink running my Wink relay. There was a hack for ST, but it was taken down. The writer said he would write a new one this holiday and hopefully i can fully be out of Wink. But i will keep my Wink 1 around to test stuff.

If you have any Lutron lights, you can not connect those to ST without the Lutron hub. I live the Lutron switchs but they arent ZWAVE like CAD said they were!(frick CAD) They are some Lutron proprietary signal. So they dont tighten your ZWAVE Mesh.

Just throwing this out there-

I should close on my new house on Wednesday, at that time i’ll Find out if the switches have neutrals run to them.

If they do not, I’ll have a bunch of switches to get rid of. (GE Zwave from the wal- mart clearance)

Just throwing this out there if anyone knows a good spot to dump them, if not I’m hoping Walmart will take them back.

How old is the house? You should have neutrals unless it's pretty old.

Walmart has a 90 day return. You paid about $20 a switch? Probably not worth it to bother with ebay.

link mother-fer??

I never said lutron was zwave. I think that hub traitor switcharoo you pulled dulled your senses.

I'll be sending will.I.Am over tomorrow to collect your wink things. Please gather them and put them into s brown bag tonight and leave them by the front door.

Lutron, hue and Sonos have been my connect-and-forget Rock Stars.

That’s what I was thinking, I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.
