I had been using Clean-My-Mac but this software appears to be charging monthly now. I want a good free one. Just basic performance/cleaning.

Clean my Mac is most certainly making your computer worse. Outside of trying to remove forensic evidence, using these “cleaning” tools like Clean my Mac or ccleaner just removes a lot of stuff the OS and apps are using to do things faster or more efficiently. I guarantee you Apple has about 30 gazallion more phd savants trying to solve the problem of making a Mac run better than the good people at Clean my Mac.

How old and what are the specs on your Mac? Apple is not a huge fan of allowing you to upgrade their laptops so if it’s an old dog you might just need to bite the bullet and get a new one. Trying to improve a 1500 computer with free apps is just pissing into the wind and calling it rain

Macs do what Macs do and they generally do it pretty well. Third party apps are highly unlikely to improve on the gilded prison of Apple. Good luck!

These, along with a good pop-up/content blocker, are all you really need.

Get rid of it. You don’t need it.

See extensive list of do’s and dont’s here from longtime user on Apple forum

A 7 year old low spec laptop doesn’t have a ton going for it. If you are just surfing the web it’s fine but your reaching end of life on any reasonable expectation of that bad boy hauling arse with an up to date OS or multi-tasking. If you’re a Linux guy you could toss Ubuntu on there (or Centos/fedora if you’re some sort of pervert ) and it might feel a little more snappy.

I had to look all that up, Ubuntu, Centos, etc.

This December'ish, if u were to purchase a new Mac laptop. What would you go with? I am not a gamer, but I do park my arse in front of the laptop daily.
