What are some good options around $500?

Only used for email, streaming and the usual office programs.

Semi regarding this, is there any way to wipe a new laptop to get all the extra added on junk off? When I buy a laptop personally it has all this free trial stuff that just bogs it down. When work gives me a new computer it’s wiped clean from all that stuff and it’s just stuff I need.

Check slickdeals.net

It would be best if you can wait until black friday or cyber monday.

Windows 10 has a "fresh start" feature built in....you can use it on a new computer to get rid of bloatware:

anybody have experience with Lenovo Ideapad's -- specifically the S340?

specs seem perfect for the wife and I'm obsessed with the design of this thing when it's closed

They're the shitty, consumer class model of lenovo laptops. Wouldn't recommend. If she likes the look of those, she'll really like the look of the one in the link I posted earlier

Not everyone is willing to buy a 3rd party refurbished laptop off of EBAY.

The person who asked me to look into a cheap laptop wasn't interested in refurbished. I wouldn't have a problem with it in most cases.

Just pointing out plenty of folks don't like refurbished and definitely will be wary of refurbished sold on EBAY.

"consumer class"

can it handle 47 browser tabs being open so she can 'save' her Etsy and Pinterest favorite pages.. oh and occasional Microsoft Office use for work

Consumer class laptops are usually shite when it's a budget option.

You will get at least one of these from a budget consumer laptop:

Shitty Display
Shitty specs
Shitty hard drive

Edit: And it's widely known that Lenovo heavily cheapens out with their consumer products over the thinkpads

reading some reviews it looks like the hardware specs aren't bad, but the quality of components is lacking... Transfer rate, color gamut, etc. all fall short of similarly-priced competitors

Just got a Dell Inspiron 14 inch chromebook 2 in 1. Best laptop I have had in ages. Comes with a pen for writing on the tablet when folded in half and utilized google play apps.

Can still use office 365 along with any other web based app. Comes with 128gb hard drive and an i3 professor all to run chrome os.

my primary work laptop is a lenovo ideapad. it doesn't have flashy stuff (no touch screen, weak resolution, not a great form factor) and the mouse pad is so bad it's basically unusable, but i use a USB mouse so it doesn't bother me.

*ETA: i use it for its guts and it was super cheap (like $800 a few years ago for an i7/16GB with SSD and HD + video card). it's hooked up to a dock that ports out the keyboard, mouse, and screen so it works for me.

i did just get a microsoft surface book 2 off facebook marketplace for $900 to have as my travel/court/home laptop. i'm transitioning to using Onedrive as my primary file source so the small HD isn't a concern.

I travel a lot for work and like to have a personal laptop (use the work laptop strictly for work). I had an older HP Stream that took a shite last night, so I’m looking for a new laptop.

I want a laptop with Windows with good WiFi reception for when I’m in hotels. I mainly use it for streaming videos and reading internet message boards.

Is the above one a good fit for my needs?
