State police in Louisiana and Mississippi use a passive radar that only activates for a brief second, if its on you, your caught! In rural areas where there should not be any false alerts you will pick up a occasional "beep" that is the radar being used down the road.

This is called "instant-on." Almost all states use them, as it is not exclusive to just Louisiana and Mississippi. These have been in use for many years. Nothing new here.
The better detectors can sense these out, providing you have a lead car "bogey" ahead of you.

I’ve used a Valentine 1 for years and have always been happy with its performance. It’s saved my arse plenty of times.

I like the R8 here because you can filter out K-band signals that aren't actually police radar.
Can you explain how you do this? I have a Uniden R1 (same as R3 but no GPS) and I'm guessing that you're excluding certain frequencies within K band.

There are different frequencies of radar that fall within the K-band spectrum that aren't police radar. The R8 allows you to customize which frequencies you want to come through and which ones you don't.
This is especially helpful for vehicles that utilize radar cruise control --- which has a tendency to produce false alarms for radar detectors that can't distinguish between a false and a real alert.
Highway Radar (Android only) for the R8 allows you to take this even further than the software that Uniden puts out.

Waze is great, but don’t use it as your only thing. Cops can use it too and mark themselves as not there anymore. I been running escort radars for a long time so that’s what I go back to.

I call that 'Hunting'. Fortunately most cops are too lazy to do that. They'd rather drive around blasting that Ka band. Same with Laser. If they're hunting, then waze AND a decoy car work best. Of course that didn't work for me when I went toodling through waterproof and got a ticket by their resident 'hunter'. But that place is like the Louisiana Arm pit.
For the most part, you can just turn off X band. And if you're in the Southeast you can pretty much turn off K as well. Ka is where the action is. Maybe some real small towns are still rocking the K band, but I don't think I've had one hit that turned out to be a cop. Most of the time it's a stupid Honda or Dodge that I pick up.

Google has baked in some of waze into google maps. The other day when I was crossing Highland on I-10, it told me speed trap ahead. Sure enough there was a trooper on the down slope of the overpass.
