I would consider how painful it would be if you broke it and your risk factors. I have a toddler and when I was making this decision I just saw so many probable risks and it was an easy buy.
And historically I never bought Apple Care on a phone.

I didn’t buy it on my 14” air.
I tend to gamble on these things though. our kids are all grown too.
also you can add electronics riders to your homeowners/renters for pretty cheap.
