X, no question. I like the idea of having a smaller phone with the same screen size. I will just go pin code only if I hate the faceID garbage.

So you're gonna pay $1000 for a phone that you have to unlock with a pin? That's disturbing

I'm pretty sure I can find other things to do with it besides unlocking it.
I get a new phone every year, sometimes more than one because I like buying used Androids for app projects I play around coding and other nonsense. I can easily afford it. Tech is my hobby. I don't bitch and complain when people spend obscene money on fishing poles, guns, coolers, and whatever else people love to do with their time/money. I use my phone daily, do these people use these items daily in most cases?
So it's not worth it to you, that's nice, I like getting new phones.

I'm happy you can easily afford it but none of what you said justifies why Apple would sell a phone without a fingerprint sensor for more than a phone with a fingerprint sensor. With the fact that the face unlock failed on stage, it's looking more and more like a horrible decision.
I'd bitch and complain if a phone I'm looking to buy doesn't have the features a $40 Android does

Well go buy the Android phone and I will spend my money on what I want to buy. Not really trying to justify my spending habits. It's a luxury item. There is no real justification for it besides I want it and it looks cool. Won't ever say it's a necessity just like any other luxury item.

after 2 years? not really. apple isn't stupid. I'm on the next plan and pay $475 a year to "lease" the phone. then when they roll the new ones out the following year, its the same principle.
if i actually paid full price for the phone ($799) they're not going to give me $475 for my trade in 2 years later. you might get 200 for it. so if you go pay for a new phone after 2 years, it'd basically be 799-200=$599. id rather just lease the phone because i still come out ahead. yeah, i guess its nice to own it, but no one these days keeps phones more than 2 years with all the new models/software updates etc
also, if you end up hating whatever phone you bought, you basically have to sell it on craigslist to pay off your contract that your locked into. while on the next plan, i can just pay off the lease terms and upgrade at any time. really, its just personal preference and comes down to carriers being greedy. but, i also use my phone 24/7 so i get my moneys worth.
sorry if that sounds confusing...

I'm just curious how long the battery on the X is going to last with that large screen. It's saying it last 2 hours more than the 7, but that's not saying much considering more screen and more power.

It says it quite clearly if you go to Apple.com.

One of the apps I've seen mentioned is using the 3D camera tech to measure rooms and such. Home decor and home improvement might be an area where AR can gain traction. What if contractors could give you estimates based on photos or videos you take with your phone instead them having to come out on site?
Went to my house the day the concrete was poured/cured. Used an app on my iPhone that used the camera to drop "construction cones," in each corner of each room. Labeled each and it put together an exact Floorplan of my entire home. Accurate on SFLA and total SF down to 5 SFLA/SF
We closed on the home in May of 2013. This was in the early part of the year.
Tech like that is quite mature and didn't need AR for that maturation.
ETA: Magicplan in the App Store seems incredibly similar to what I used but it doesn't use "construction cones," in the corners. It's version History also only dates to mid-early 2014. So it was another app. I'll update again if I can find it. But the point is that 3D House Measuring tools are littered all over the App Store and have been for years.

Per usual, Apple doesn't disclose the capacity ratings of the batteries in its phones, but it says the iPhone 8 should last about as long as the iPhone 7. Likewise, the iPhone 8 Plus should last about the same as an iPhone 7 Plus. But it notes the iPhone X can last up to 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7.
What does that mean, exactly? While it doesn't tell us is how those two additional hours are achieved, Apple provides a comparison chart that shows the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus can last for about 21 hours of talk time, while the iPhone 8 is rated for 14 hours. For internet use, the iPhone 8 Plus is actually rated for 13 hours, while the iPhone X and iPhone 8 can last around 12. When it comes to video playback, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X offer about 12 hours to the iPhone 8 Plus's 13 hours. But for audio playback, the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus last up to 60 hours compared to 40 on the iPhone 8.

Lol it was a fail. If it was a restart issue the phone would have said "passcode needed to unlock after restart". Instead it said "passcode needed to enable faceid" which means the faceid didn't work, similar to when fingerprint doesn't work.
Knowing that your wrong, even if it was a restart issue, they still failed on a live stream to show how easy it is the first time. They probably rehearsed multiples times too.
Still getting the X

I just dont want the HUGE plus size
The first iPhone I purchased was the 6+ and I traded it shortly after for the 6. With a case on, the 6+ was just too big and bulky carrying around in jeans or pants pockets.
I didn't realize the X is the same physical size as the 6/7/8. That's very intriguing.

Are you using iOS 10?
iOS 11 is different, it has the cop button and such for disabling Touch ID. I am running iOS 11 and it says "Your passcode is required to enable Touch ID."

Will be getting the X in white at some point. I’ll probabaly let the hype die down first and see how well the FaceID technology works. If they bypassed the fingerprint technology, I can only assume it’s close to perfected already, but I’ve been wrong before. And I’m sure there are still bugs to work out.

Played around with it some with different fingers that aren't in TouchID for me. It either says Try Again or TouchID does not recognize fingerprint when you fail TouchID.
edit: if you fail TouchID a bunch of times, it does go to the message that you have to enable TouchID like at the conference.
He could of been playing with it before or other people could of been screwing around with it before and it did fail. If that failure was the last one needed to disable FaceID, it would of given that message like at the demo. Fail on stage is still a possibility.

I have no idea what to do in this situation. Really don't need either phone, but there is no point in holding on to my 7+ with this upgrade program.
Not sure if I really want to pay another $12 a month for the X.
And the 8 is literally the same as my 7+ just with wireless charging that I would have to go out and spend more money on just to use.
Someone convince me.

I posted that from my phone so I couldn't easily attach the picture. This picture was included with the article I linked to and I believe is what they saw on screen while The Verge was live blogging. So I wasn't wrong, that error clearly says you have to enter your pass code to enable FaceID.

It may be a presentation fail, but the concern was it was a technology fail, which this doesn't appear to be. It was a legit concern considering they completely dumped TouchID so it is slightly reassuring that it was a setup fail and not a FaceID fail.
