Building a new home media server/NAS and I’m considering UnRaid or Windows. My current server is an old gaming PC and uses Windows 10 with DrivePool and Backblaze, and I run Linux Mint in a VM. My new PC will have an i5-12600K and 32GB of RAM, with the main goal of being my Plex server and have 3-5 users. I want to be able to have a few 4K streams at once and do HDR tone mapping if possible.

I keep hearing that UnRaid is the best and that Linux handles transcoding and HDR mapping way better than Windows, but it will be a little bit of a learning curve and will really suck if something breaks that I don’t know how to fix. Just wondering if anyone here has used UnRaid and can help me choose.

Thanks!

Didn't really care for unraid whenever I tested it. I liked Proxmox with a TrueNAS VM best before moving my TrueNAS server to bare metal.

Proxmox also has built in ZFS functionality, but I just prefer using TrueNAS as a whole

Thanks! I believe UnRaid supports ZFS now actually, but good to know your experience. It’s hard to get a good read on Reddit or Linux forums since it’s always an echo chamber.

TrueNAS here for the last 12 years or so... have both Core (x2) and Scale servers on bare metal. Looked at UnRAID a few years ago, but decided to stay with what I knew.

I have UNRAID running multiple vm(security cameras, test servers, etc) and 10+ docker containers(unifi controller, Plex, radarr, many more).

It's been really solid and I have no complaints.

Ran freenas on bare metal for a decade. Recently switched to proxmox with freenas virtualized. No complaints so far
