Anyone have trouble using a sound bar with firestick?

Bought a soundbar and firestick for my parents. It’s hooked up with an optical cable. Firestick is plugged into hdmi on tv. Soundbar works when watching cable but not while using firestick. Anyone have this issue?

Possibly HDMI ARC issues

What soundbar? What TV? Looks like it's probably configured or hooked up incorrectly but without models it's impossible to tell.
The short answer is that the TV probably doesn't convert the audio from the HDMI feed to output through the optical cable. Either you haven't configured the input and output properly or you need to additionally connect from the TV to the soundbar through the ARC output on the TV.

I've used a firestick for over a year with a sonos soundbar with no issues...until about a month ago. It has been a huge pain in the arse since then.

What makes you think that? I'm using an optical out to a soundbar and it works no matter what input I'm using.

It depends on the tv and the sound bar. They aren’t all the same.
