My son and I have been flying those crappy little drones you can pick up on Amazon for $50 and they’re just not cutting it. They’re super unresponsive and difficult to control. Any of you have experience with a good drone for kids that won’t cost me $1000?

I picked up a DJI Mavic Mini for my son (9). I looked at some slightly cheaper options but thought the DJI would be worth the little extra investment. Some of the reviews of the cheaper Amazon ones mentioned the drone losing comms and just flying away. The DJI has GPS and “return to home” features, plus extended range by comparison.
The DJI has been great. The control is phenomenal and fairly intuitive. My thoughts are that learning the DJI interface would be useful if we decide to upgrade to a better drone in the future.

My son is only interested in seeing things crash so I stick to the cheap ones. He's a little younger though.

I know Walmart has some pretty nice drones for under a $100 that take nice photos and high def videos. If you want to go a little higher go DJI mini 1 probably under $200 on ebay.

Yes. When my kid was that age he crashed his a bunch of times, and eventually broke it.
But it was Ok. We recycled the NiCad Battery to power LED lights on his pine wood derby car a few years later....
