Any ideas why one movie on Max would stream so dark on my TV?

Tried to watch The Menu tonight and it was so dark I couldn’t see anything. Everything was dimly lit and not in the way that people have complained about lighting in recent years. It was a streaming issue.
I turned on Hereditary for a few minutes and it looked fine. Everything else looks fine on the screen, but I couldn’t get The Menu to stream with watchable lighting.
Any ideas? I looked online to see if it was on Max’s end, but there aren’t any complaints on the web.

It’s been an issue with Max (and HBO Max before it). It’s just way darker. This is from their FAQ (It still hasn’t helped).

Screen too dark?
If live sports or movies in HDR or Dolby Vision are too dark, do one of the following on your TV or streaming player:
Turn up the screen brightness.
Turn off HDR.
If you need help finding the steps for your TV device, search the internet for "adjust brightness" + your device (e.g., adjust brightness Samsung TV), or “turn off HDR" + your device (e.g., turn off HDR Apple TV).

It’s weird though that it’s just one movie. I messed with my tv settings and it didn’t help at all.
I ended up watching a Black Mirror episode on Netflix and it was fine.

A while back I had a TV that had some Dynamic lighting response feature (or something like that, not 100% on what they called it) but the set supposedly would reduce the brightness if the room was dark and it thought the show was too bright....
I hated it it was so inconsistent, ended up replacing it, disabling the feature would never stay disabled.

Looks like Max has The Menu in HDR/Dolby Vision while Hereditary is only in SDR.
My guess is that it’s some sort of HDR issue with your device(s). Are you watching through an app on your TV or another device connected to your TV?
Something else to keep in mind is that a lot of TV’s have different picture settings for HDR vs. SDR. I know this is the case with Samsung TV’s. On my Samsung the brightness is set considerably higher for HDR than for SDR.

I usually subscribe to a paid platform for 1 month to move to another. Usually you can watch’ most of the content and by the time you circle back it’s pretty fresh again.

Lg has something called…
quote:
Auto Static Brightness Limiter, or ASBL. It uses an algorithm to detech when there is movement on the screen. In theory, when the content on the screen is static, ASBL kicks in and reduces the brightness to reduce burn-in risk
And other brand oleds have a similar feature, but under different names. Long dark scenes seem to exacerbate the problem. Some manufacturers & models allow you to go into the service menu and turn it off though I believe.
This is different than eco mode btw, where the tv adjusts the picture backlight according to the level of light in your room.

I have the exact same problem. Mine is for aquaman as well as the new season of true detective. Every other show/movie is fine but these are almost pitch black.
