I work for a company that prints out a lot of blueprints. My floor has this ancient HP machine that's been here literally 15 years, an HP Designjet 500 42". Ever since we've had this thing, we've usually kept 36" paper on it, and then rotated the document we want to print to portrait and it prints the document from side to side, no problem.

Lately it just picks the landscape orientation automatically, no matter if orientation is set to automatic, landscape, or portrait. Thus cutting off the side of the document.

What I'm wondering if this could signal the end for the plotter, or is it some software issue?

Let me know what you printing gurus think. I'm about to wheel this piece of shite onto the staircase and put it out of its misery Office Space style.

It could be a software issue. I just had an issue with our Cannon IPF755 getting hung up due to a new firmware update that didnt work for some reason.

Better get your wallet out and the can of lube. These new plotters are very expensive. The one we have was right at $10,000. And just two weeks ago spent over a $1000 to replace all the ink and print head. They are nice, quick and quiet, but they are pricey.

I think the problem is that the plotter thinks you have a 24" paper roll installed. There must be a sensor that determines what size roll you have installed and it is has failed. I had this problem on our old Designjet 450C. It would only plot 24" worth of information even though I had a 36" roll on it. Nothing I tried would get it to realize I had a 36" roll. We finally bought a Designjet T520 and I believe it was around $2500. It's a 36" wide plotter and runs circles around our old one. Just loading the paper is so much easier since it loads automatically and also aligns the paper. I would sometimes spend an hour trying to loading a new roll onto the old one it was so finicky.

Have you checked the rotation and size setting in the front panel "Page Format" menu ? They could have been inadvertently changed by someone.
