does not compute. Bluetooth sucks.

Also, it forces non-Google Photos users to use Google Photos. I'm a realist who understands that some people are going to be using iPhone no matter what. I'd prefer it to be less of a pain to get them in the system.

've never understood how zips are preferable - it requires a lot of extra steps over just direct downloads.
read up on compression and it might enlighten you.

Also, I do use the desktop application. What made you assume I didn't?

because you are talking about downloading a zip.

Google photos is a fantastic way to share but it certainly does not force it on people.

What other method do you have for getting it on a local hard drive?

Please enlighten me. If it's so seamless and easy, why did it work poorly?

What's your preferred method? Just generating a link that's "outside" of Photos?

Well my preferred method is definitely google photos.

But I sometimes either use groupme, email, or just a link that takes you to the google photos album (don't have to have google photos installed to view it).

If I'm simply sharing one picture and not a whole album or video I'll just use regular mms.

You can say anything you want about Google Photos, but at least it makes it possible to share between ios and android. Apple doesn't even attempt to make a solution to sharing between the two. I am also a realist and understand that people are going to be on both platforms. Apple would be smart to start opening up some services. Being a hardware centered company is not going to do well in the future. People are already starting to hold onto phones longer and longer.

I am saying mostly positive things. To be clear - I am pretty much an Android fanboy and use one of the flagship phones directly from Google.

Yeah, this seems to be true and it annoys the shite out of me. What's even more annoying is when the iOS people act like this is YOUR problem and not theirs.

I think this link functionality outside of the app has been added since my original difficulty with iOS people. Before, they had to download Photos, and if you sent them something that way, it was only inside Photos and not automatically integrated into their Apple photo "wheel" or whatever it's called. So I was like "just click on download them", but that utility was extremely buried in the app - to the point of the "regular" user having almost no chance of finding it.

I still don't see why Photos can't have an Airdrop-esque utility...local sharing in real time. I have to assume it's a patent issue.

Yeah, it seems that new feature (at least new to me) solves some of the complexity of the other person having to have Photos.

Gotcha, I wasn't trying to come off confrontational, just pointing out that alot of the issues with ease of sharing have more to do with apple than they do with Google. Google is basically trying to constantly come up with workarounds, which is why the big push for RCS.

As far as airdrop goes, I'm not extremely familiar with that, but Android has Android beam, which I assume is the same thing. I can also send data over NFC I believe. I've never actually used any of this as I just share with Google photos, but best I can tell it has similar functionality to airdrop.

Edit: I also have the ability to send with my native "files" app on my pixel 2. It appears that this is trying to pair via Bluetooth and NFC.

I don't really know. I pulled up my share menu on a video after looking at this thread to see all the share options. I saw a share with files go icon. I clicked on it and it asked me to put in my name and then searched for nearby devices. (Which there were none)

Today was the first time I saw that

Another aspect is that Photos forces you to put your pictures on Google's servers.
