Bought a Pixel 2 XL earlier this year. Had it for a few months know and still haven't found an app that will allow me to watch vids sent from iphones. Plus, pics are grainy too from iphones (think I remember reading that issue on here).

Is there anything I can look into to help with this? The vids just don't even open up

You need to have the person send the videos either through Google photos app, or a chat app such as WhatsApp.

iPhones use iMessage to send uncompressed videos to other iPhone users, but when sent to an Android user it sends as a regular MMS message which is compressed to complete shite.

I have a pixel 2 and my wife has an iPhone. We both use Google photos app and just send videos through it. With the free unlimited storage, I don't understand why everyone, iOS and Android, isn't using this app

Also, to add, if the videos aren't opening at all I don't know what the issue is. Pictures usually are clear over text for me, and videos always play, they are just unwatchable quality.

Google has been working on a fix to this in RCS messaging, but it is slowly being adopted by carriers and Android , and it is years away from being adopted by iOS

All of what he said. Iphone users won't budge though. Too hard headed.

Google photos gives google maps a running for the best app available across all platforms. It's simply fantastic.

If you have someone that you exchange pictures and videos with alot, get them on Google photos. Show them how to unlimited storage works, the assistant videos that are created, and all the other cool features. It is very easy to share videos at that point.

My wife is all about iPhones, but she uses pretty much every Google app available. I'll never understand it.

PS. If you have someone with an older iPhone that loves selfies, Google photos is supposedly working on a portrait mode editing effect so that could be a selling point for them. My wife is on an iPhone 6s, and portrait mode is about the only reason she would upgrade

Is this the only issue at play, though? One time when I was having trouble, I had the iPhone sender send the video to another iPhone...and it was still really grainy.

I want to agree. Pixel 2 here and lifelong Android user. But...it still doesn't have the Airdrop functionality (which, IMO, continues to be the biggest thing iOS has over Android.)

Question: what's your best method for dumping photos from Photos to, say, a desktop? Is there any method that avoids the clunky zip file nonsense?

Google Photos has a desktop application. Every photo you take on your phone is available to be viewed, edited, etc on your computer.

You don't dump anything from your phone to your computer, they're just there already.

It's 2 clicks to share something with someone. You click share, then you click their google photos account name (or whatever method you want to share it by). I don't really see how airdrop is superior.

clunky? a zip file is what un clucks things.

So if you dont use the desktop application, and you do download all the photos in a zip, what makes it nonsense? seriously what makes a zip clunck?

I prefer to store my photos ultimately on my own backed up local hard drives.

That requires reception/service. The bluetooth-to-bluetooth direct functionality is superior.

Also, it forces non-Google Photos users to use Google Photos. I'm a realist who understands that some people are going to be using iPhone no matter what. I'd prefer it to be less of a pain to get them in the system.

Just didn't work smoothly. It was really annoying. Also, I've never understood how zips are preferable - it requires a lot of extra steps over just direct downloads.

Also, I do use the desktop application. What made you assume I didn't?
