I still show up as a "green text" on my friends' iPhones but videos come in crystal clear and group chats are updated accordingly.

and i was just pointing out i don't think this is automatic either since everyone had a pending minor update as well (XX.xx).
They do auto update but it can take a few weeks sometimes. The new 17 updates were just released like a week ago.

Correct, green/blue bubbles won't change. Besides the obvious feature upgrades like read receipts and better media, look in the text entry bar before you start typing it will either say Text Message * SMS or Text Message * RCS.
That's how iphone users will be able to recognize who is using Google Messages.

I have read there are more issues with groups than with one to one messaging.
Not sure how google/android/jibe is handling mixed groups as far as encryption. I would think it might have to off for entire mixed group chat, but if the only iPhone or iPhones temporarily lose RCS connection or status for whatever reason does group then become encrypted for remaining android users or does it revert to the the sms mixed group for this (or even if just 1 iPhone loses RCS status)? With either does it switch back to the mixed RCS group chat when the iPhone is seen as back up on RCS or is a new group required to regain RCS?
The one to one messages between an android user and an iPhone user has had less issues. Many of the perceived issues there are more likely to be because the iPhone has not updated or just doesn’t have the ability to update to 18 (I also have found multiple Samsung users that also weren’t using RCS).
Another issue with RCS being used is with some of the bugs and meshing of differing versions some messages were getting lost or arriving very late, so some iPhone users ended up turning RCS off wanting the reliability of regular texts getting to android users and also receiving them from android users more than the features RCS adds.
EDIT: I just read that at some point (maybe still is an issue) Wi-Fi networks that didn’t support IPv6 block RCS on iOS/iphones. Same with some MNOs who don’t or didn’t early on support IPv6. I am not sure if 18.1 addressed this.

Im (android, google messages) in a couple group chats with iPhone users that I helped update to ios18. Everything seems to be working fine with all the promised RCS goodness. Everyone is on ATT tho.
