Airtag to track trailer or tractor?

Would this idea work? Hiding wouldn't be an issue. I understand the basics but I imagine there's a reason or two against this idea. TIA.

It's only going to work if there is an iphone within bluetooth range of the tag. I've seen claims that this range is up to 800 feet, but I've also read that in real world use range is often less than 50 feet. If you hide it somewhere within a metal frame, range will be significantly reduced.

I'm thinking on putting one in the plastic breakaway charger box on the trailer tongue and behind the fuse panel on the tractor, tractor is plastic/composite skinned.
I'm not planning on watching someone take it down the road, but thinking if it wound up somewhere and then got a ping.

One potential problem with doing this is that if whoever takes it has an iPhone, they will likely get a notice that they are being tracked and have the option to disable. My wife has one on her keys and when I take her car somewhere without her, I get a warning every time.

Yeah that would be a downer, and the type of folks I'm guarding against would probably be hip to that feature.

It would work but knowing that it's location tracking, unless connected to your wifi network, would be intermittent. It's not a constant ping like it would be near your phone.
Then again, for a big arse tractor, that's all ya need.
