Turns out that Ubiquiti breach last January was an inside job.

Nickolas Sharp, a former employee of networking device maker Ubiquiti, was arrested and charged today with data theft and attempting to extort his employer while posing as a whistleblower and an anonymous hacker.
"As alleged, Nickolas Sharp exploited his access as a trusted insider to steal gigabytes of confidential data from his employer, then, posing as an anonymous hacker, sent the company a nearly $2 million ransom demand," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said today.

After his extortion attempts failed, Sharp shared information with the media while pretending to be a whistleblower and accusing the company of downplaying the incident.
This caused Ubiquiti's stock price to fall by roughly 20%, from $349 on March 30 to $290 on April 1, amounting to losses of over $4 billion in market capitalization.

Yep and the guy that did it was the "whistleblower" that Krebs reported on

Saving you from buying their overpriced stuff

I find that most of their network gear is priced just right.
Their cameras are a bit overpriced compared to Chinese brands, but do you know of an American company that sells cheaper cameras?

Cameras aren't networking gear
Their switches are grossly overpriced as is their UDMP (not nearly as bad as the switches though).
Their APs are good stuff, they just have such little versatility with non-unifi stuff. I have an AC Pro myself, but I'm likely going Aruba or rukus with my next AP
Edit: Ubiquiti makes great stuff, they're just they're just very apple-esque. Overpriced over centralized ecosystem with heavily dumbed down features

Ubiquiti channel switching is better than Aruba. IMO an insider threat issue is more proof of how secure the products are.
The same thing happened to AWS with their web hosting with the Capital One breach and they are still the best web hosting platform on the planet.
Aruba isn't even on the same planet when it comes to channel switching capabilities, saw this onsite with a client recently and saw how solid the channel switching was, as I was running attacks against it. Aruba rogue device detection never works also. Ubiquiti is worth the price. Everytime.

I like how law enforcement covers for the VPN companies.
"We figured out who he was even though he used VPN because he forgot to use the VPN and totally not because they're sharing data with us."

He forgot to ask his VPN provider, “you’re not a cop, are you? Because you have to tell me if you are “
